Affinity Designer recover .autosave

Recommended Posts

Is there any way to recover a .autosave file where the linked parent is gone?

I had a hard drive failure and l lost the original file, but there is an .autosave file that looks like it's exactly the size of what I lost.

Try copy *.autosave file to *.afdesign (in your working directory), and open it.

When I try that, it does not work:

As a side note, since hard drives can & do fail without warning, it is important to have a good backup strategy, one that stores all files you can't afford to lose saved to at least two different locations.

All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7
Affinity Photo

Indeed, first thing I tried was changing the file name.

I have a faintly good backup system well my computer is unattended things automatically sync between three different physical locations. I had just gotten into a creative zone and worked 10hrs straight without letting the system go to idle long enough to sync. So the only thing that was lost was this one project.

autosave file is not unfortunately a backup/full copy of the whole unsaved afphoto file, but only record new and unsaved modifications. So he needs the original file, to which the unsaved edits will be added.

So it really serves only to rescue unsaved changes, not to rescue the lost file.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

If you mean that

  • You closed a file, and Affinity prompted you to save, and you said No, then it's probably (almost certainly) gone.
    or
  • You started Affinity, and it said you had an unsaved file and offered to recover it, and you said No, then it's gone.
