Divide a circle dashed circle into shapes

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to divide a circle shape (with line color and no fill color) which uses a dash line style, so each dash becomes an individual shape?

Pressing the “divide” button has no effect over the circle, and it remains a single shape ring.

The use case is that Android Studio doesn’t support line styles, hence when importing the SVG, in converts the dashes back a single line ring with no dashes.

To divide the ring into shapes will solve the problem, yet the divide tools doesn't work for this shape.

Because the Expand Stroke feature tends to add lots of extra nodes, for simple regularly spaced dashes, this may work for you:

  1. Use the Cog Tool to create a cog shape with lots of teeth, each one representing one dash
  2. Adjust the cog shape values (tooth depth, hole radius, notch width, etc.) so you get just unconnected thin teeth
  3. Convert the shape to curves
  4. Divide to get individual dashes, each with just 4 nodes

This dashed circle to shapes.afdesign file includes the history so if how to do this is not clear from the above, you can move the history slider back & forth to see how it works.

If you have not experimented much with the Cog Tool, you may not realize how many different kinds of shapes you can make with it. The Affinity Designer - Shapes video tutorial beginning at 3:36 provides a quick demo of some of the possibilities.
