'Affinity Photo has stopped working'

Hi Paul Spence and Welcome to the Forums,

Couple of things for you to try:

1st, right click on the shortcut for Affinity and select Properties.  Then on the Compatibility tab make sure none of those are enabled, i doubt they will be but always worth checking, if they are enabled untick them and try starting Affinity.  

If none of the compatibility options are selected, i'd suggest a reset of the program by Launch the app with (ctrl) held down until a Clear User Data dialog appears. Press the Select All button then press the Clear button. Note this will reset everything to app defaults - user preferences, palettes, macros, everything.  Once you've done that, Affinity should continue to start up as normal.

None of the compatibility tabs were enabled.

I tried your 2nd suggestion, but no luck with that either. The Affinity Photo initial screen appears but the windows error message sits on top and when I close that everything closes down.

I have tried Photo version 1.6.5. and the beta version 1.7.0.
