I don't understand why the stitching looks good until the corners. I tried every setting and still the corners are no good. I saw where someone said they bought a set of brushes and complained that the person who made them did not include something for corners. So is there something I am supposed to make for the corners separate? Been messing with this for 2 days now and no matter how much I adjust things and make design over still the corners are BAD. This is not my brush but one I got for free same (this is in 1.7 beta) problem corners are BAD. Thank you

This is a bugbear for me too, when you want to make a neat border Affinity fails big time, the only way I could get a neat'ish border was

  1. Draw a rectangle
  2. Convert to curves
  3. Apply a Brush
  4. Select the node tool
  5. Select all 4 nodes of the rectangle
  6. Select Break Curve

This way at least gives an even border with overlap on each corner depending upon the style of the brush/pattern

You could create brushes with mitres on each end, this only really works for square borders because the mitre distorts on a rectangle, although you could create a corner embellishment to cover the mitre mismatch.

After yours seems like they all come together. But to get the stitches (brush) straight I use the pen tool then select the brush and maybe that has something to do with. I really can't get it straight doing it any other way. Oh, and it is a vector brush does that make sense? I think putting something nice in corners will be the solution for me. But if you have a second, could you tell me what I did wrong? Was the box suppose to disappear? Was the brush suppose to do something in the box?

Since I don't sew it is quite possible I have misunderstood something about this, but it seems to me this is the same issue that would arise when using a sewing machine to automate creating a decorative stitch -- the stitch pattern has to change at corners, & the sharper the corner the more difficult it is to get something that looks pleasing.

So maybe that's what the complaint about nothing for corners is referring to?

Yeah, I don't so either lol. But I guess like the girl I was talking about when you get a brush you want it all to work. Other brushes do it too if you go around the whole area like the stitching brushes. I decided to put a nice element over it so it looks like it is supposed to be that way lol. Some people purchase this stuff to make cards and things so figure you want the whole thing nice. What would it look like say someone got an invite to a wedding with the corners looking like that ugh. Thank you for saying that cause I was thinking the same thing, but I still want it to look good in corners. LOL

We really have to look at real world stitch and embroidery and how they do borders, a quick google search shows that corner motifs are a big part of border stitching and embroidery.

Thank you for sharing that. I never thought to look that up cause I don't see and I would think it would be..... well not messed up looking like on AD. But looking at the pictures I guess in RL it does that too. Thank you. Believe it or not, I am a googleholic so surprised at myself I did not think to look that up \

When I hack together programmatically a zigzag stroke and use that stroke with a drawn rectangle it will look pretty much similar in certain corner regions, depending on the choosen line end cap and join styles for overlapping then.

The way Illustrator gets round it is to allow internal and external corners etc, its quite elegant really.

Taking a leaf out of Adobe Illustrator's book I made a side border

1076629861_ScreenShot2019-03-02at23_24_25.thumb.png.0d9c9f8a9b729eb8aa573764fe8ff796.png

and a shorter version of the side brush.

I made a quarter arc for the corner and applied this brush.

This is how it ended up

After doing this, I thought what about applying a border to a rounded rectangle instead of a square corner and it kind of works, not only that but with the rounded rectangle shape tool selected you can adjust the corner radius.

So instead of one straight line, I would also have to make a curve? But where do you put it? Does the program no that cause it seems that it is as confused at me LOL.

No, that was just me experimenting and then I thought what if I just used the Rounded rectangle instead.

So...

  1. Select the rounded rectangle
  2. Draw a rounded rectangle
  3. Apply your brush
  4. with the rounded rectangle tool selected you can adjust the corners (should see a red dot you can slide in and out.

Tada!!

Rounded rects should generally give more even distributed corners when used via plain drawn graphics primitives, it's pretty much in every 2D graphics lib routines like that.

Agreed, I think until such time as Affinity create a better brush feature or even a separate border feature the rounded rectangle is a more acceptable option, plus you have a semblance of control over how the brush wraps around corners.

Having said that the "rectangle tool" can do rounded corners too and like the 'rounded rectangle tool" it can do concave, flat, cutout or none.

Rounded Rectangle Tool appears to actually be the Rectangle Tool with at least one corner set to Rounded.

Basically, the Rounded Rectangle Tool is a rectangle with the rounded corner preset already set as the default corner... if that makes sense, it is also slightly different to the Rectangle Tool initially, with the Rectangle Tool not having any corner settings until after it has been dragged out, whereas the rounded rectangle has corner presets from the get-go that you can change prior to dragging it out, once both rectangle types have been dragged out their respective context menu's are identical.
