Merging like colors to create one shape

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

A couple months ago I recently switched over from the Adobe software to Affinity. There have been a few things I have noticed that are in Illustrator but not in Designer and am unsure if this is another thing or if I'm just missing it.

I'm working on creating a design in Designer and will be sending it to my vinyl cutter so I need to have no overlapping lines. In Illustrator under the pathfinder window they have an option called merge. This is similar to add boolean but instead of just adding the shape to the overlapping shape, it merges like colors together.

Is there a quick easy way in Designer to do this? As of right now I have been subtracting and adding shapes but it seems like this way is taken forever to do. I would like to draw out my design (as everything I do is in black and white) and when I get done, click a button and it merges all like colors together.

Thanks in advance for the help!
-Aaron

In Adobe Illustrator using Merge will create compound shapes. In Affinity Designer you can use the Layer > Create Compound.

Still not the same as Adobe Illustrator but close, I wonder if you can make two shapes and compound them together.

When I do Layer - Create compound it just acts like the Add boolean. I may just have to adjust how I draw things (or in this case trace) and start with the entire outline of everything and then do the inner shapes. As of right now I'm drawing shapes, copying, subtracting, pasting, etc. and is becoming a nightmare.

I tried looking through all the tabs and such and couldn't find a feature that acts the same as it does in Illustrator (which kind of sucks). I don't expect the programs to be the same, but this was one feature in illustrator that I loved. That and the locked layers to where you could go in outline mode and see the image still there so you could see what you were drawing off of.

Not sure if this helps:

1. Draw one circle

2. hold alt key click&drag a double from it

3. convert the background one

4. establish 2 points where the circle is highligted

5. select a point to open the circle and delete

6. go layer->Expand stroke

7. boolean add - kill fill+add border - done
