It's a planned feature. The only thing you could feel bad about is that we don't know when it's going to be a reality.

Best regards!

And the length of time it is taking.

What has this thread become, oh my...

I think the original purpose is really mudded at this point, with free etymology- to Adobe history classes, whereas it is pretty clear: as a decent vector drawing package, a lot of users (myself included) are either

- getting the base linework from someone else (a client sends it to you, or it is provided by the government, or a consultant firm, the possibilities are endless)
- are doing other stuff as a living (architects, urban planners, data scientists, etc.), and create the linework in another application(s) (CAD, BIM, GIS, etc.), which they would want to recolour, restyle, etc., to fit the branding of the project for example

so we need a system to sort the often tens or hundreds of thousands of random objects to be able to apply global colours, groups, folders, <any other relevant Designer feature>, to work with them, because Designer is a good illustration software, that's why we are here at the end...

Right now, this is basically impossible. Let me rephrase, so time consuming, that it is not financially/time-wise feasible.

That's it.

I honestly don't get why this is a "pet-feature" to anyone...

 [~off-topic]

A lot of people mentioned other use cases, other software for inspiration, e.g. I've provided another example how it is done outside the Adobe ecosystem (ARCHICAD) in an extremely robust and simple way, to illustrate that it is the idea of doing batch selections for sorting that matters. If Serif comes up with a unique system, I'm all happy. Not having anything is really sad and extremely counter-productive on the other hand.

What I find sad too, is the indefinite state they let the users in. In two weeks we could grab a beer and celebrate the 5th anniversary of this thread. Still, the moderator only can say what he did when Publisher was pushed back again and again and again and again and...: it's done when it's done. As others, I'm in the construction industry too, where scope, budget, and deadline are fixed things. I also do scripts for automation and custom objects for our workflow, so I think I have a vague understanding how software development differs in these terms (scope, budget, deadline). What I don't understand is the lack of transparency - we can debate about this later, whether it is the appropriate phrasing of my thoughts in English, but it a simple question: is this/a similar feature or a set of features coming that fulfil the initial request , or not? It's binary to me: yes/no. No? Fine, I won't bother this thread anymore, and continue using Photo and Publisher. I get, that you won't give us further information, you've made that clear thousands of times, but not answering a simple yes/no to these ones are just getting ridiculous at this point.

To me two good examples of how to manage expectations and requests are McNeel with the Rhino forum (I can see a few user names from Discourse here, they can agree/disagree) and the Corona dev team (former Render Legion, now Chaos I think). The Corona development has an open Trello roadmap here for example: https://trello.com/b/dgI8vjDb/corona-road-map-cinema-4d I find both situation really-really comforting, knowing that they do listen (yeah, there are issues there too, of course).

As someone who bought the complete suite, I honestly don't like the way Serif treats user requests (specifically this one), but that's my problem I guess, which I can manage.

What I consider disturbing on the other hand is the hostility of the "100% satisfied" users towards this very reasonable request and the people voicing their concerns.

Hard, hard agree. I've long given up on ever using this software again. At this point, it's the principle. I tell everyone I can about this absurd story of the simple feature that never was. I'm only subscribed to the thread to see how far it goes. Cheers, everyone!

I also really need this feature since I use it almost everyday(Using Adobe Illustrator), as I usually work on designs that were done on other software like CorelDraw & Ai, but at the same time I appreciate the work done by Serif; StudioLink, Save History, Snapshots, the Speed of the apps, and many other things that cannot be found on Ai or CorelDraw, but at the same time I still wish to have this feature as soon as possible, and hope that Serif hear us and know the importance of this feature for many users.

Let me add my voice to the infernal chorus (we sure ain't divine!) respectfully requiring this feature. I use this literally almost every single time I'm working in Illustrator. I really, really, want to use the Affinity apps as my daily drivers but there are just too many missing functions like select same (and 1-bit graphic support, and vector warp, and, and) that leave this suite in the Amateur field when it comes to production graphics.

Posting to +1 to keep letting Serif know that lack of this feature is a deal-breaker for full adaption of A.D. Seems like Serif got so into building other apps (Photo, Publisher, iOS apps, etc.) they forgot to finish Designer. A shame.

Basics that would save a lot of time --- select same font ( fix when someone uses a rogue font ) , colours for branding ....

We sure have a sweet chorus going in this echo chamber!

In case you're new enough here not to know, the Serif staff very seldom participate in discussions about feature requests. They read and take note of the discussions, but seldom comment, as a matter of policy.

Thanks, but I'm not new. I've been following the thread for years so I'm well aware of how Serif staff treat us.

Just another user lending weight to the request for this feature. I am a professional designer, I recently began using Affinity for personal projects I do at home. I am currently trying to recolor a seamless vector pattern I bought on Shutterstock. It's an eps file. It is literally thousands of small pieces. I rarely start anything from scratch and often the artwork I receive has gone through several file formats before it gets to me. This feature is absolutely fundamental for users trying to make use of artwork that has been shattered by that kind of conversion. The workflow you've allowed for here is severely limited.

I'm remembering back to the days when software companies warned people not to submit feature requests and indicated that they never listen to them.  That was quite normal at one time.

Serif at least does listen, and many of the requests have made it into the software over time.

Where are you seeing this?  I see people downplaying the importance of the request, and for some users it may well be less important than for other users, but if anything all of the "+1" posts start sounding like so much noise after a while.  I don't think anyone is devaluing the original request, they are probably just tired of wasting time checking the thread every time it shows that it has been modified only to find a zillion more "+1" posts and no additional content.  I know I am getting to that point with some of these threads (this one is not as bad as some... yet...).

Consider: the more time Serif's developers need to spend reviewing these threads, not to mention posting to them as some seem to wish for, the less time they are spending on actually developing the requested features, and the slower the progress becomes.

I'm glad those days are over. There are numerous other companies engaging with their users on their respective forums in a constructive and prospering way.

scroll back a few pages - "ridiculous claims" about this "pet feature", or that they "don't give a [ fill in your favorite catchphrase ] what people have on their wish lists and cry and moan about", etc. - this thread is more than 5 years old. it had been explained by numerous people very patiently, that restructuring external documents to apply designer's own logic to it is basically impossible as of today, no one finds it feasible to manually select objects and regroup/join/do whatever with them, it is a barrier that prevents me from using designer on a daily basis, which is a shame, because I really like the other members of the suite. but I feel like a broken record...

I don't know what to say about the meaningless "+1" comments, I also feel they don't add value (and if I remember correctly the forum etiquette asks you not to do it), but I guess it's not up to me to stop them, as I'm trying to argue in a meaningful way.

I think this would be one way to do it, but again, the guys at McNeel or the Corona/Chaos Group people are much more open and development is actually really fast. Serif has another way, I get it - although this "it's done when it's done" phrase is so annoying to read, but again, I feel like a broken record.

about being even slower: I don't know how to interpret this, scroll back to the first post and see the date yourself.

neglecting any kind of implementation a "select similar/find&replace/etc." feature for such a long time just doesn't make any sense to me, it is so basic and necessary in many (for me interpret: most, nearly all) cases...

I don't know what else to say.

I don't know what's going on in this thread right now, but I'll add another vote to this feature request.

In my current project at work, the lack of this feature forces me to go back to Illustrator in order to complete the task.

HI everybody,

Since it really looks like we have to wait for ages before getting eventually those really mandatory features, I am looking for an affordable tool to include in my workflow that I would usr just for this feature. I keep working with Affinity products and I am ready to totally ditch Adobe, but I need a (temporary?) solution.

Thanks to all

@DomD Sketch (Mac) is a capable alternative if you're focused on UI work which is a perpetual license and a year's worth of updates. After that you pay a lesser fee to continue to receive updates. Aseprite is an amazing Pixel Art editor with a perpetual license and currently infinite free updates. Both of those are quite specialised though and not the generalist tool that Photoshop is or Designer is trying to be. As it is, Designer is sadly not fit for purpose when it comes to heavy lifting -- at least for my use case.

If you already have a CC license I'd stick with that, at least for the foreseeable future. It'd be wrong to assume Affinity are actually working on this, at least not for the version we've paid for.

Inkscape is free, open source and multi-platform. It has this feature and I've used it before in combination with Affinity tools.

The trouble with Inkscape is it involves installing loads of stuff to make it work. I downloaded it and then decided against it when I realised what needed to be done and how it isn’t really a proper MacOS app.

You probably grabbed an X11 build instead of a native Quartz build.  From comments I have seen the Quartz builds are less stable at the moment but that is supposed to be fixed in the upcoming 1.0 version which is now in beta.
