Photo iPad Luminosity Mask from Gradient Map

Similar results can be achieved using Photo for iPad, add and adjust your Gradient Mask. Now select the original Pixel layer and switch to the Selection Persona, on the Commands menu choose Select Tonal Highlights > Select Highlights. Now you can hide your Gradient Map layer and add a HSL adjustment layer.

After selecting the highlights, you also have the option of Inverting the selection from the Commands menu. To deselect press and hold one finger on the screen, release after two or so seconds to be sure to bring up the menu.

Instead of using this method you may want to try Blend Ranges instead with your adjustments, see this users blog post and a forum post for more information.

Thanks for your reply. With what you describe, not sure why the gradient map step is necessary. Also, I’d like to have a visible mask that I can control beyond the tonal range selections that photo gives you. Lastly, I’ve been using the blend ranges, but it would be helpful to have a visual representation of the mask as I’m adjusting the parameters as in Nino’s method. Is there not a way to get a selection and consequent visible mask from the gradient map as he shows? Why does photo not have a rgb channel or am I missing something?
