Paint brush not working

Recommended Posts

I asked on Twitter was told to come here.

i use Affinity photo for iPad on my iPad Air 2

i used paintbrush in the past, but not in quite a time, today I can’t get it to work.

Live watched multiple videos on how to paint, I think imfollowing step by step but no paint.

Ive tried it on a brand new document. I’ve tried on a pixel layer of an already started document.

I adjust opacity, yet I can’t get the brush to paint.

Guidance please. I’m wondering if I altered some setting prevent8ng it, or if I’m missing a step.

Hi Firstoscartgrouch,

Welcome to the forums :)

Could you please provide a screen recording of you using the brush, showing all layer, brush and colour settings as you do this. If you're unsure of how to record your screen, you can find out more here - https://support.apple.com/HT207935

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!

It’s hard to see what you are doing, change to these settings and see if problem still exists.

Air2= no Apple Pencil. Touch for Gestures on = no brush paint applied.

This is why the Touch for Gestures only should apply to ALL tools. It’s just too confusing having some tools work and others not work. A simple on screen toggle would be perfect.

Could you provide a screen pic of your layers studio showing the layers while painting.

Do I need to create a layer?

No if you have set Document Menu /Assistant to add a pixel layer when painting. See pic attached.

Looking at your layers it appears that you are actually painting on the black and white mask? Maybe that layer was selected (highlighted). If you have a layer selected, the paintbrush will paint on that layer rather than create a new pixel layer.

If all you want to do is remove scratches or blemishes why not use the Inpainting brush or blemish removal tools? They are very effective. Just duplicate the original image and work directly on that or add a pixel layer above the image and set tool to current layer and below. That way the repairs will be drawn on the pixel layer leaving the original layer untouched. You can merge them later if you want.

Inpainting brush is superb. Just set it slightly larger than the lines you want to erase. It use adjacent pixels to determine fill. Excellent for removing objects as well.

There are times when it would be useful to be able to restrict the source area for the Inpainting Brush Tool but in general it does work extremely well.

That is why I nearly always use the in-painting tool at opacity, flow and hardness all set to 100% with a small brush to avoid pulling details from too far away in my experience.
