Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.7.0.107)

Status: Beta

Purpose: Features, Improvements, Fixes

Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo

Mac App Store: Not submitted

Download DMG: Download

Auto-update: Pending.

Hello,

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the latest beta of Affinity Photo 1.7 for macOS.

Photo 1.7 is a (very) significant change to the currently shipping 1.6 version, so, as ever, I would strongly urge users to avoid the 1.7 beta for critical work. This is especially true as this is only an early build of 1.7 - we will release many more builds before 1.7 ships. Things will be broken in this build - please use it to explore the new features and not for real work.

If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.

It’s also worth noting that we aren’t done yet - we are still working through reported bugs from previous releases and hope to fix as many as possible before the final release of 1.7.

With all that said, we hope that you will enjoy the new capabilities introduced in this release and we look forward to any and all feedback you give to us.

Many thanks (as always),

Affinity Photo Team

Changes Since 1.6 Release

Performance

- The core processing engine in Affinity Photo has been rewritten to take advantage of the powerful discrete AMD GPUs in modern Mac hardware. It will now automatically use any compatible discrete GPU, alongside the Intel GPU support present in 1.6. Typically this improves compositing / editing performance by at least 1000%. Performance when using integrated Intel GPUs has also been massively improved.

- External GPUs (eGPU) are also supported - including hot-plug-and-unplug support.

- Multiple GPUs are supported - if you have more than 1 GPU (ie. Intel + AMD in MacBook Pro, or Intel + eGPU in other Macs) Photo will use them all, at the same time, to improve performance. There is no limit to the number of GPUs which can be used.

Brushes

- Photo 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush.

- The brush engine in Photo has been rewritten to use the new GPU architecture described above. With GPU support, even huge brushes with 1% spacing will perform well. All brushes / brush tools are accelerated.

- Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. We have more symmetry features on the way - so stay tuned during the beta process.

- Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance.

- Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control.

- All brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request ;)

RAW

- The RAW processing engine in Photo has been rewritten - producing better results and improved performance. It also takes advantage of the GPU architecture changes described above.

- RAW files now load much more quickly - especially if you have a compatible GPU.

- Reimplemented support for XTrans sensors.

- The denoise algorithm has been rewritten. It produces better results and takes advantage of the new GPU architecture.

- Hot pixel removal is now automatically performed by the Serif Labs engine.

- Profiled lens correction are more stable, apply more quickly, and can be toggled in the Develop UI.

- The histogram in the Develop persona is now presented in the output colour space - as opposed to always being linear.

Filters

- New “Procedural Texture” filter with advanced presets support.

- New “Voronoi” filter.

- Denoise, Clarity and Shadows / Highlights filters have been rewritten (using technology from the Develop Persona).

- More filters are now available as Live Filters - including the new Procedural Texture filter.

- Live filters have been rewritten to improve performance - especially when multiple filters are used in a document.

- Improved Polar to Rectangular and Rectangular to Polar filters.

Adjustments

- The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls.

- The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request.

- The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten.

- The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten.

- PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved.

- The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten.

- The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider.

Tools

- The Crop tool has been rewritten - it now supports resolution changes, absolute pixel size and has a much improved preset mechanism.

- The Sponge Brush tool now gives more correct / pleasant results.

- A general tools overhaul has been performed - providing editing of grids, guides, page origin, across multiple tools (not just in the Move tool)

General

- “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Photo will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done.

- HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Photo. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed.

- A large number of new cameras are supported for RAW development (we will provide a list of the new supported cameras as soon as possible!).

- The batch process dialog now fully supports expressions for height and width - available constants are “w”, “h” and “dpi”.

- Photo now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request.

- A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added.

- New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quick operations on clipping masks etc.

- The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved.

- New provider options have been added to the stock panel - support for Unsplash and Pexels. Both of these providers offer full-resolution stock imagery which is free to use.

- Metadata is now dynamically synchronised with your document - so if you resize then export, the values will be correct.

- Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features.

- Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes.

 - Numerous other bug fixes - too many to list!

I am impressed by the low resource usage of the 1.7 beta.   With resource intensive tasks such as Tone Mapping, my 2012 MBP retina is not screaming at all compared to 1.6 release.  I suppose moving a lot of the computation to GPU has contributed to this.

Well done, Andy and team. 1.7 is shaping up nicely.

Out of curiosity, what is an example use case for "New cube setup mode for grid"?  I see its usefulness in Affinity Designer and I hoping I can be helped with use case for Photo.

Thank you so much.

Hi @Andy Somerfield i'm so happy to find this anouncement.
Was updated via @MEB twitter publication.

Busy downloading the thing now and will report here asap.

i'm more interested into what the inpainting and the flood selection tools can do now.

Blessings !

Considering no isometric studio in Photo, I would estimate it is most likely for consistency and compatibility with the other programs, as you might open a file created in Designer that already has such a grid set up.

As a simple hobbyist user, I am not clear about why the levels adjustment has 4 sliders and how to use them.. Help please!

You can start by viewing the Serif Affinity official Levels Adjustment Tutorial. There is also Affinity Photo Help document.  You can search for "Levels Adjustment".  The help file is very comprehensive.

Thanks Nana, but the video is for the old levels adjustment with only 2 sliders. The new leveks adjustment in the AP 1.7 beta has 4 sliders. The help file has been updated with bald statements of what they do. No explanation there as to why they have been added and what to do with the extra 2 sliders. Hopefully there will be another excellent tutorial video on this soon.

Big thx for this version:

- extrem brushing does not slow down CPU anymore, Impainting really speeds up... :-)

- brushes are like in 1.6 macro-able (except the smudge and the colorchange with "clean/take always background" does not run, same in 1.6).

- the displacment in group-bug is also fixed :-)

And some other nice fixes. Thankyou!

######

But what does this mean?

- All brush tools now offer primary / secondary colours in the colour page.

- All brush tools can now be axis constrained once brush has started - not just the pixel tool.

- Made auto-rasterisation more consistent across tools / filters.

???????

######

To GrahamMYC: try and see! I remark that the lower slider does a little bit the opposite, than the upper ones, but with a kind of gamma-shift????? However, i prefer curves instead levels!

Okay Peoples !
i'm back with this quick one:

* Liquify Persona is now quite okay and few stuffs like twirl works a bit more naturally but still the speed of this (even when increased) looks a bit mechanic and should be made more natural, do not forget the thing is done with a Brush and we should feel it naturally going and not machine style.

* Flood selection tool is much intelligent then in previous version and does a better job but still you need to push further and get it do even better
* brush selection tool also is far better than the previous beta did and this is really encouraging.
* I like the refine button in both selection tools, i stopped touching it with previous version (beta and stable) because it was the best way to mess up with selection but now it is working and i like the way it makes difference between foreground and background and also the fuzziness is gone and that's good
* i've tried to drag and drop a layer/mask/filter etc. from one opened tab to another but nothing does. Please fix as it is a common way to operate in the same software.
* Select a Mask then Click + drag and drop it to above or bottom layer doesn work (or maybe i don't know how to do that) i can simply Click - cmd/ctrl+c - select layer and cmd/ctrl+v. Please fix !

* Now the software itself loads faster and uses less resources but still i believe this can be pushed high or simply improved.
* it is not yet possible to increase the size of icons in the layer section, please make it possible to switch between at least 3 size small-medium and large. it is helpful for those doing public demonstration or simply teaching or even doesn't not have good eyes anymore.
* There should be (on the welcome screen) a tab or a section added (within "View samples" - "View tutorials" - "Connect") that we can slide/click to and just view our recent project.works; it is painful to go search for it the "File" Menu, bringing it forward, beautifully and nicely made is :17_heart_eyes:.
* Possible to implement a Home Button that switch us back to the welcome screen where we can view recent project and just click to open it ?

Okay ... this is too much and i hope i have not pushed things too far.
BTW ... This Beta is great and i can imagine how impresive and lovely R1.7 will be.

The built-in help document in version 1.7 has been updated to provide information about the two extra sliders you are talking about that.

THanks Nana

My version is 1.7.0..209. It does not yet include the updated help file. But that changed help file addresses 90% of my query and will be included at some stage. For professionals it will be 100% clear, but for hobbyiists like me, we are guessing as to whys and wherefores of remapping. No doubt a little practice will solve that.
Many thanks for your time and trouble.

In the normal version of AP, I have the option to batch develop RAW images. In the Beta this disappeared

Have you installed your macros into the beta version? The beta and stable versions do not share user-provided settings, brushes, macros, etc.

No I haven't. I can't recall if, in the 1.6.7, this was the standard setup or if I added something myself though. Where would I find my macro's? Because I'm not seeing anything in the macro panel.

It's nothing standard in 1.6, so you must have added it. You'll need to look in your 1.6 Library panel to find it.

"- Metadata is now dynamically synchronised with your document - so if you resize then export, the values will be correct."

Does this mean that AP will now retain the previously-existing metadata in the document? For instance, I add XMP/IPTC and Mac system metadata (star ratings, etc.) to the TIFF files with a cataloging program (NeoFinder). That metadata is viewable in Preview and searchable with Spotlight. However, when I do any manipulation of the TIFF in AP then save it again (with the layers intact), all of the metadata that existed is erased. Gone.

Does this change address that problem?

--------

EDITED TO ADD UPDATE: Finally got the beta version to download (server was stalling out when I posted this), and have discovered that the metadata issue remains. Not sure what this change was intended to do, but it certainly is not what I expected!

Crop images with a path (clipping paths)

Ok - apparently I have to wait with my "problem" only until the update -> 1.7.0.107: Fixed some PSD path import issues

A move from Adobe would be greatly facilitated if PSD files with clipping paths could be further processed in AP or imported into Publisher / Designer with editable paths. The same applies to JPG files -> works only in AP, but not in the Designer (in the Publisher, I can not test it at the moment, because of problems with the new beta update)

Otherwise, as a longtime Adobe user (advertising agency, newspaper publisher, printer) I am very excited about your software!

Greetings from Lower Austria

Did Affinity Photo Beta v1.7.0.107 change the default program association to open in Beta....?  Rather than the latest GA v1.6.7?  Everything with an *.afphoto extension launches the Beta version of Affinity Photo after the 1.7.0.107 download and install.  I've changed Finder to reflect the default program of Affinity Photo 1.6.7, but somehow it it was changed and it seems to have been consistent with the latest Beta download.

I think you have to deselect 1.6 (Affinity Photo) in Settings/Extensions/Photo and then select 1.7 (Affinity Photo Beta). At least, that's how it works for me.

That is not the case with me. I shut everything off in 1.6 off and still get the error message. I used to be able to run stable and beta versions side by side also.
