"Error occurred while exporting" for PSD

Hi Lee Wright and Welcome to the Forums,

The problem is with the layer called: • Price is with delivery within 15km of Orange PO. • $1 per km for delivery after 15km. • Pick-up after wedding or next day. • Booking deposit $50, balance 7 days prior to wedding. • All prices include GST & tax invoice issued. • Full public liability ins

That seems to be the text at the bottom of the design.  If i delete this, i can then export it back out to PSD.  I'll need to get this logged with the Dev team to find out why the crash is happening, but for now deleting that layer and re-adding it using the text tool in Photo should resolve the issue :)

For me, all that is required is to rename the layer and give it a simpler, more standard name. Then the export as PSD works.

FWIW, I get the same error on my Mac, & renaming the layer to something simpler as @walt.farrell suggested eliminates it.

From what I can tell, there is a 243 character (including spaces) limit on layer names, so for example "• Price is with delivery within 15km of Orange PO. • $1 per km for delivery after 15km. • Pick-up after wedding or next day. • Booking deposit $50, balance 7 days prior to wedding. • All prices include GST & tax invoice issued. • Full public l" works fine, but adding even the first "i" to "liability" for 244 total triggers the error.

Hi @obiobik,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Do you mind sharing/uploading the  affinity file you are having trouble exporting to PSD please? I can provide an upload link if you wish to keep the file private -just let me know.

Yes I would like to have an upload link. I cannot share the files publicly due to the non-disclosure agreement.

Hi @obiobik,
Thanks for the files. I've logged the issue to be looked at.

In the file obiobik - VSL-201223-KV-1-1.afphoto, the issue is the layer "16" (fourth layer counting from bottom). Right-click on it and select Rasterise & Trim. The file should then export correctly.
In the file obiobik - VSL-201223-KV-4.afphoto, the problematic layers are all called "Layer 1 copy 2" (there's four). Again Rasterise & Trim these layers and the file will export correctly.

Don't forget to NOT SAVE these changes (or just do a duplicate of the originals first) if you need to keep the files intact for further edits later since you are basically discarding the data of these layers that's located outside the canvas to be able to export for now.

I just rasterised and that worked too. Thanks a lot. Could you please delete the files I sent

Hi @obiobik,
Rasterising the layer shouldn't be enough - it still gives the same error. You can however scale down the problematic layers a bit (to below 30.000 px) and export as PSD but this obviously changes the design a bit.
What OS, and PSD export preset are you using?
All files sent to us are only used for testing/diagnosing purposes and deleted when no longer required, don't worry.

As a general related query: Is there any way that the Error Messaging could be more helpful and give us some hint of the problem?

i.e. Error occurred while exporting "Layer #5 - abc123"

I currently have this error with a 3rd party file, after some digging around narrowed down the issues to a set of Grouped Pixel layers (doc attached).

"Layer 5" and "Layer 22" -- both appear to be problematic - even when they are isolated as the only single layer (no grouping) in the document.
