Making a shape transparent

Recommended Posts

New to all this, but think this will be a simple question for people who know what they're on about...!

Can I make the white outline round the red circle in the attached helmet picture transparent so that the background shows through instead of the gold helmet underneath?

Hello wxmmoz,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

Select the helmet and the white circle and press Subtract on the Persona Toolbar (check screenshot). This will subtract the  circle from the helmet shape (destructive operation) - resulting in a single shape.

If you want to keep the circle and the helmet intact while still performing the subtract operation, press ⌥ (option/alt) while you click on the subtract button on the toolbar (non destructive boolean operation). It will create a compound object instead, meaning you can still select both original objects and edit them individually - the compound shape will update to reflect those changes).

Check this video for more information about non destructive boolean operations.

That's because you only have the circle selected. You must select both the circle and the helmet shape, otherwise you can't perform the subtract operation between them. To do this click with the Move tool on one and them, and then ⇧ (shift) + click on the other to add it to the selection. You should now be able to perform the subtract operation.

Let me know if you still have trouble.
