It's happened twice now. I have to shut down & restart unless there is an alternative? Unplugging the mouse doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Which APh version on what operating system, further what sort of mouse and driver? - It might help others (in order to help you) to be more specific here!

Right, sorry. AP 1.6.5.123, Logitech trackball that is very reliable. It only happens with AP. New Dell Inspiron, win 10

Do you already use and tried the latest Logitech Setpoint version from Sep 13, 2018 (note there are 32-Bit and 64-Bit versions available) under Win 10?
