Still learning the differences between PS and AP. Something that I didn't realize I did so much of was quick selections of a portion of a transparent layer, for example text that had been converted to outlines.

Let's say I have three outlined words on a layer and want to change one word to a different color: In PS I would roughly lasso around the one word and hit the arrow once to nudge it, which would select all the live material inside the lasso'd area (but not the transparent area).

In AP it seems that I need to use the flood select tool, check CONTIGUOUS, click a letter of the word, hit ADD, and then click in each of the rest of the letters of the word individually. Is there a quicker way to select only a few of multiple objects on a transparent layer?

Thanks!

It depends ...

  • If it is just one artistic text object (let's say -> "three outlined words"), but setup with no fill and a black contour (so it looks outlined), it is just one layer and one object. So it will only select as a whole when the layer isn't locked. [See the bottom one on the image]
  • If it is instead the above but converted to curves, so every text character of "three outlined words" has it's own layer, then selecting a portion of it via marquee lasso and coloring just that portion works if they are not grouped together. [See the top one on the image]

Also note under the AP  "Preferences -> Tools" the setable option:  [x] Select object when cutting the selection box!

Thanks, I think I understand but my issue is this: I have some old layered Photoshop PSDs and the text was converted to curves in PShop so all on one layer. The PSDs open fine in Photo and selecting with rectangle works exactly the same, but in PShop I can de-select the transparent area and just change fill color of remaining selected object. See attached.

Well, not exactly sure what you are saying but in trying to figure out nesting I did find the "Recolor" adjustment layer that affects only the object in the area selected and that works, so thanks!

I was thinking on something like this. You can drag an object inside other objects, such as curves:

Also, you can use the "Color OVerlay" Effect:
