You can change the keyboard shortcuts assigned to the brush tools in Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts. Set the first popup to Photo & the second one to Tools, then scroll in the list to the tool you want to change. Click in the field that shows the current shortcut assignment & type a new one for it or click the x in a circle to remove the shortcut completely.

So for example, they could be assigned like this:

    B - Paint Brush
⇧P - Pixel Tool
⇧S - Smudge Brush
⇧R - Color Replacement Brush

Note that you may have to quit & restart the app for the tooltip to show the correct shortcut, but the shortcuts become active immediately, even without the restart.

That is worse than the protected tool cycling (via Shift) as used in Photoshop's Brush tool. We all can only memorize a final number of hotkeys and there's just a a very limited number of easy to reach letters when having to press even multiple hotkeys with them. The proposed scheme is wasteful.

It is more intelligent to use tool cycling for families of tools in function-rich software. For those tools however, which don't immediately (with the first stroke) make obvious what they do one needs a safety mechanism - which in this case, known by many people could be Shift.

Serif would avoid a lot of support requests by hooking this up in a way that avoids painting with the wrong brush type in a mask.

I can only speak for myself, but I have no problems remembering the keyboard shortcuts I use frequently. I have also set up the Tools panel to use two columns with separate icons for each of these (& several other) tools, so it is reasonably obvious which one is active.

My only complaint in that respect is I wish in the panel the contrast between the selected tool's background & the unselected ones was greater, or the selected tool was outlined, or they had done anything else that made it easier to see at a glance which tool is the active one.

The default behaviour is really annoying, when you switch between tools using the keyboard and spend 1 minute wondering why the brush doesn't work as expected until you realize you are using the colour replacement brush...

You are replying to a topic that is now 3+ years old. Since then, in Preferences > Tools there is now an option "Use ⇧ modifier to cycle tools." (⇧ is the symbol for the shift modifier key.) If you enable it, unless you hold down the shift key the tools won't change if you repeatedly press a shortcut key shared by several of them.

What I find REALLY annoying is that, if I open Photo and the healing brush is already selected, when I hit "J" the first time it cycles to the Healing Brush. Drives me nuts.

When you start Photo, and Open it create a file, the View Tool (Hand icon) is selected.

So I'm not sure what you're describing.

What do you mean by "cycles to"? As written, it looks like you are saying it does not cycle at all but remains on the same tool.

This is in addition to what Walt said about the View Tool always being selected when opening a file in AP.

We need more info if we are to understand what you find annoying.

Sorry I should have said, if I open Photo and the Inpainting Brush icon is already visible on the side toolbar, after I load a photo and hit "J" it cycles/switches to the Healing Brush before I can use the Inpainting Brush. It should only switch if I use the shift key, as that is what I have set in my preferences.

Hopefully, this is at least clearer.

When you first open a new or existing document in AP, is the View Tool selected or not?

For me, yes. However, try this:

  1. Start Photo
  2. Create a new document
  3. The View Tool is selected automatically. Click on the Paint Brush to switch to the Paint Brush Tool.
  4. Press B.

At that point, I have the Color Replacement Brush Tool selected. After that, to cycle the tools I need to hold the Shift key, but not that first time.

That doesn't happen for me, I assume because long ago I set the Color Replacement Brush Tool to use a different shortcut, & set "B" only as the shortcut for the Paint Brush Tool.

I am not sure what relevance any of this has to the issue @henryg has -- I do not think "J" is a default shortcut for any of the brush tools, so perhaps we need to hear more about how he has set up the various tool shortcuts?

For me, it happens with any of the grouped tools where I have not modified the shortcuts.

So, it also happens if step 3 I click the Inpainting Brush, and then in step 4 press J. At that point, I have the Healing Brush.

J is the default shortcut for the tool group that @henryg is talking about, the one that includes the Inpainting Brush Tool but has the Healing Brush Tool selected by default when you launch the app.

Thanks. I guess it was so long ago that I changed it that I lost track of the default.
