Having copied the background layer and having applied a filter, say SCREEN, to brighten up the picture, I decide to apply a mask to apply the filter only to certain areas. I paint out or in the areas I want, however, when I then want to change the opacity of the areas changed, the entire picture is affected by the opacity change. Shouldn't the opacity only affect the areas I changed? Am I doing something wrong?

Just try the following: Copy the background layer of a photo, then apply the SCREEN filter to brighten the image. Then apply a mask to the copied background layer. Using the brush takes the affected areas back to the original background. Now use the opacity slider. It should work on the brushed areas and not on the SCREEN filter/layer. But, maybe, I approach this this wrong way.
