New Icons - PLEASE DON'T!

I agree with keeping the old icons. they can update them but it would be cool to keep the triangular shaped concept. I loved that.

I personally love the new icons. The old one looked quite dated and hinted towards skeuromorphism, which isn't as popular now as it was 10 years ago. I welcome the icon change, though it'd be nice to have the corners rounded ever so slightly

Also, how does the “Publish” icon (which should be “Publisher”) relate to multi-page documents? And how does the “Design” icon (which should be “Designer”) relate to vector drawing?

Good day, I'd like to introduce myself as  a new fan of Affinity. My name is Allen and I recently switched to Affinity Designer last month out of frustration for Adobe Illustrator.

For those asking, if the icons can be changed for MacOS, yes it can be done. 

Follow the steps below

1. Go download yourself any Affinity software icon of your choice, make sure it is in .png format.

2. Go to your Downloads folder and Double-click on the downloaded .png icon file. This will open in Picture Viewer by default in MacOSX

3. Press Cmd + A (Shortcut Key for Select-All), this will select the image from within your Picture Viewer Windows. Then, press Cmd +C (Shortcut Key for Copy),

    this image will remain in your clipboard for the time being.

4. Go to Applications folder and navigate to where your Affinity Software folder is.

5. Select the icon of the Affinity Software you wish to get the icon changed.

6. Press Cmd + I (Shortcut Key for Get Info) again, this will bring up the Get Info properties box.

   Note: There is also another way of bringing up the Get Info Properties Box and that is to Right-Click on that Software Icon that you want changed.

7. Select the icon of the Affinity Software on the upper left of the properties window. 

9. And now for the final touch. Once you have selected that icon in the Properties windows, perform Cmd + V (Paste)

10. Now, you've got yourself that icon replaced.

 

Hopefully that solves and helps those who want to customize their app's icons. Btw, been doing that ever since OSX came in.

I agree with the new icons, but nevertheless they are futuristic to say the least. sleek and clean. I work on both PC and Mac. Mac at Office,

PC at home.

If affinity were my client and the “A” was part of their brand requirements, it would be incorporated. These are for my personal desktop aesthetics, so just need to design for my needs. While I consider the original icon designs and attributes for source inspiration, sometimes I go in a different direction. For these, I wanted 3 icons that were unique, sync together, not totally foreign to the originals and match my personal round theme. I change icon designs often, depending on theme, monitor size, desktop background etc. Nothing wrong with the original Affinity Icons, just thought I would share my personal ones.

Additionally, there is also an app in the Mac App Store called File Icon Changer. When I updated to Mojavi, there was a bug in which changing icons in your approach would be too pixelated. I change the icons for folders and everything. In order for the icons to have their actual look, they now need to be completely square (all four sides the same dimension). File Icon Changer can change the icon despite the file's dimensions. Just in case you're interested.

So I see that I didn't really give my say on this topic. Well I am a big fan of variety, and Affinity is a great example. Rather than doing things the same way as other competitors, they bridge for difference. And to me, it is why I love their software so much. It is more comfortable to use, it is more reliable, it is more attractive, and I have to say that I love how they do things their own way. So to me, I am not a fan of the new icons. They're not terrible, but it seems like it's an indication of matching the modern world, whereas the older ones were an indication of saying, "We stand out." And I don't mean for this to sound minimizing, because competing with the modern world is standard. I guess what I'm saying is that everyone has different ways of expressing themselves, and there is not one methods that fits all. That is why I believe in variety. So I find the way Affinity expresses themselves very appealing, and I wish there were more companies that did the same. I hope Affinity continues to do what seems right to them and not feel obligated to match the rest of the world. That is my opinion.

I'm really disappointed in Serif for changing the icons. We are probably never going to get them back officially, but I will show you how to do it for yourself.

Method 1 (Recommended)

1. Right click on the shortcut for the desired Affinity program, and select Properties.
2. Click on Change Icon...
3. Click on Browse...
4. Download the icon attached this post, navigate to it, and select it.
5. Click OK on both windows.
6. Restart your computer if the icons are not updated.

This method doesn't break after Affinity updates, however it will only change the icon on your desktop, and not in the taskbar. I would recommend this method.

Method 2 (Full)

1. Download and install the program called Resource Hacker.
   (Note: This is a safe and well known program. The link I've added is the official website. You can check the downloaded file on VirusTotal.)
2. After installing, you should see an icon for Resource Hacker on either your desktop or in the program list. Right click on it, and select 'Run as administrator'.
3. Once in Resource Hacker, click on the icon and navigate to the folder where Affinity Photo/Designer is located at (e.g.: C:\Program Files\Affinity\Designer). Open Photo.exe or Designer.exe.
4. On the left you can see a folder view. Expand Icon Group, and select the only entry there. It will be identified by some numbers. At this point you should see lots of Affinity icons at the right side. Right click on the identification numbers, and click on Replace icon, then Open file with new icon...
5. After downloading the icons attached to this post, select them from your Downloads folder or where you've saved them.
6. Click on Replace.
7. Click on the icon to save changes.
8. Close Resource Hacker.
9. Restart your computer.

This method changes the Affinity icons on the taskbar, as well as all shortcuts for the program. The icons will be reverted after Affinity updates. Using this method, you can also change the in-app icons if you spend a little bit more time on it.

I might consider making an program, that will do this task automatically, in this case I will upload both the program & the source code to GitHub. In this case the program would replace the in-app icons as well.

Using your 2nd method, I can see the new (old) icon in Explorer, but when pinned to the taskbar, it is still the flat one. Did I do something wrong?

Update: For some reason, after another restart, it worked!
