Inpainting after rasterising layer

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have cropped a photo to size. I have rasterised the layer, but when I'm using inpainting brush, it keeps taking data from outside the canvas, but as far as I know, it shouldn't, as the layer has been rasterised. The inpainting tool behaves as the layer has not been rasterised. Am I doing something wrong?

APhoto Beta 1.7.0.188

I attach sample screenshots when I'm trying to inpaint building on the top right.

So you think the area is too big? I have completely erased the area after rasterising and then tried to inpaint, but it brings back the data from outside anyway (which should not exist in the document anymore as it's been rasterised).

I'm confused.

For some reason the inpaint function in Menu>Edit is always greyed-out (it's the same tool anyway?) and the keyboard shortcut Alt+Backspace doesn't work.
The way around is to inpaint on a new pixel layer with Current Layer & Below function turned on. That works OK (but still the function in Menu is greyed-out and shortcut doesn't work).

Still, I think it's a bug and it's not how inpaint tool should work (according to James' tutorials), because it doesn't recognise that a current layer has been rasterised - keeps getting information from outside the canvas.

Also inpaint option in Menu>Edit is always greyed out and shortcut Alt+Backspace doesn't work.

The direct answer is that rasterizing no longer gets rid of the area outside of the canvas and i a know issue that will be fixed in the next beta.

I have had the same issue with other tools and that was the answer

Unlock the layer after rasterizing and move it around, you will see that the data is still there

Help (F1)  says ...

As a supplementary method to brush-based inpainting, you can inpaint areas selected in advance via  Edit>Inpaint.

Hi Rick,

I believe that is the answer but for the life of me I cannot find any reference logged in our database about this. Where did you read it will be fixed in the next beta? We've just released it and it's still not behaving :56_anguished:

That is the way it worked and it was so referenced in more than one video..  It always worked that way for me. It was recommended to rasterize before inpainting on the edges so it would not draw from areas beyond the visible

There's a new Rasterise & Trim option from the Layer menu at the top. This will essentially discard anything outside your newly cropped image.

Why would that be needed if rasterizing worked correctly? or is th n idea from the Department of Redundancy Department? :D

We're just fulfilling a feature request.

Could you take a minute and explain? I am not being difficult, I just don't get it as rasterizing was working correctly and matching wnat other MAINLINE photo editors are doing?

Some of these request smell like that thankfully brief feature where a copied selection would paste somewhere out  yonder in the cornfield. It seems like a lot of peole want to move the fucus from being a photoshop replacement to also having features from the old photo plus, and perhaps chasydraw and others

I will be happy to find out from the developers for you but I would guess that we want to give the users a choice as to what is deleted when they rasterise a layer.

Thank you for looking into it. It just behaves differently than in other programs (or in 1.6.5.123) and not as it's mentioned in one or two tutorials made by James. I'm afraid it may cause problems with other tools such as Create Colour Palete from Document.

Also, option in Menu>Edit>Inpainting is always greyed out.

At you low priority convenience. I have found another cheesy change. I tyles some text then duplicated it via CONGROL J and  shrunk it and moved it. The next Control J shrunk it and moved it in the same pastern as if I had used the Transform panel. Since I was working on a cheesy Meme, that was perfect but for the other 99.99% of the time that would have been horrendous ... right up there with copying and having the paste appear out there in the cabbage patch

edit: Some of these toybox ideas would be great if they could be turned on and off via a check box

Sounds like you simply did a Power Duplicate, Rick. As far as I know, that's not defined as working only via the Transform panel. To avoid that, Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V is probably better than Ctrl+J :)

Control J has always duplicated the item in place or am I missing something? Item meaning the layer if nothing is selected or th selection in that case

You’re missing something, Rick! Ctrl+J has always reapplied any transformations, so if you create a shape and duplicate it the new copy will be an ‘in place’ duplicate, but if you then move, resize and/or rotate that copy the next duplicate will also be moved, resized and/or rotated.

Odd. It will recreate whatever changes were made in place except rotation. Then it adds the rotation angles up replicating the duplications into a circle. I had similar the other day when I shrunk some text and each control J shrunk it further and moved the duplication down and to to the right, replication what I had done with the first duplication
