RedEyedJedi
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make a poster similar to Obama's "hope" poster. I've seen a a few tutorials done using photoshop but im reluctant to try those because i know i would get lost eventually trying to follow along on affinity photo. Anywho, does anyone have a good tutorial they could link me? Thank you. If there are none to be found then its ok. i just wanted to try it out. My Favorite learning tool so far have been youtube videos where i can follow along. thanks.
firstdefence
Because Affinity doesn't have the simplify filter called Cutout, you have to get creative and the way you can do that is to use the Frequency Separation Filter to retain detail and using either median blur or a box blur, create blocks of colour in conjunction with the posterise adjustment filter. You can make a swatch of the colours using the swatch from image option in the swatches panel. Posterise Level was set to 4 Box Blur was set to 5 Photo by Kal Loftus on Unsplash Barack_Obama_Hope_Poster.afpalette toltec and RedEyedJedi 1 1 Quote iMac 27" 2019 Somona 14.3.1, iMac 27" Affinity Designer, Photo & Publisher V1 & V2, Adobe, Inkscape, Vectorstyler, Blender, C4D, Sketchup + more... firstdefence
Well, while cruising the www in my quest for information, I came across this... It is an online version of a very popular GIMP plugin called G'MIC and it look what it has under the Artistic section of its filters. This is what it produced on default settings The preview is a bit hit and miss so what you see isn't necessarily what you get but its close ish. smadell
Here's a macro that creates an "Obama Hope Poster" from a photo. It uses a Posterize adjustment and a Gradient Map. Note: it is a single "afmacro" file, not a library category. Import it into the Macros panel, not into the Library panel. smadell
Alfred -- here's an ".afmacros" file for all our friends in iPad-ville. RedEyedJedi -- an "afmacro" file is a file which contains a single Affinity Photo macro. You can import it into Affinity Photo (on the desktop) by opening the "Macros" panel and clicking on the import icon. an "afmacros" file (not the extra "s" at the end) is a file which contains a category of macros, and which can include more than one. Import it using the "hamburger menu" at the top of the Library panel. It can also be imported into the Macros in Affinity Photo for iPad Obama Hope Poster.afmacros Alfred 1 Quote Affinity Photo 2, Affinity Publisher 2, Affinity Designer 2 (latest retail versions) - desktop & iPad Culling - FastRawViewer; Raw Developer - Capture One Pro; Asset Management - Photo Supreme Mac Studio with M2 Max (2023}; 64 GB RAM; macOS 13 (Ventura); Mac Studio Display - iPad Air 4th Gen; iPadOS

smadell
I look forward to seeing it. By the way, you can alter the colors by placing a Curves adjustment just above the image (and below the Posterize and Gradient Map adjustments) - dragging the curve up, down, and so forth will re-distribute the colors, and will change the look of the poster. firstdefence
It's still very textured, you need to drop the posterise down more or add some blur like a box or median blur. Also in the Gradient map double up on the colour points like this: The Dust & Scratches filter has a nicer effect on the smoothness of the colour blocks. TangoHotel
You people have been a huge help. Some other places on the forum on how to do a bitmap pattern were exceptionally helpful. The Affinity community rocks! This is my first result. I will be doing some more as well later. more precise like the original. firstdefence
