Master Pages: Child Masters, and Overrides

Recommended Posts

I'm just now working though the help files for Publisher, getting to know the application.

With regard to Master Page capabilities, it would be nice for the final shipping version of Publisher to allow users to do the following:

  1. Create "child" master pages that inherit the properties of a "parent" master page.
  2. Overide selected master page elements on individual pages to which the master is applied. For example, one might have a Master A with a variety of standard repeating elements, including a logo in the upper margin, but have the need to detach and delete the logo for one page. Or one might want the master page to show a place-holder text and/or photo frame, and have the need to detach the text and/or photo frame to replace placeholder content with actual text or photos.

HI @Mark Oehlschlager,

just for your information: as far as I know the help files are still work in progress. You may find some things still missing or referring to Affinity Designer functionality.

Cheers,
d.

Hi Mark - you should find you can do this in the latest build(s)

We’re working on this, but it’s not ready yet.

As dominik says, the help files are not fully up to date at the moment, unfortunately.

You are not missing anything. Publisher does things slightly differently. You can apply a Master page to another Master page and add to or completely replace the contents of the existing layout. Try to Right-Mouse-Click on a new Master Page and select Apply Master…

Seneca,

Thank you for the tip. I suppose they'll document this in the help files later.

BTW, what is the significance of the "Replace Existing" check box in the "Apply Master" dialogue box? What are the effects of either choice?

"Replace Existing" will replace all the Masters applied to that page, unchecked the master will be added to the existing ones. It can be quite useful.

Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
