Jagged lines when Vector Inking over a sketch

Recommended Posts

I wanted to try out vector inking a sketch so I brought in a doodle that I had done in SketchBook, put it in a locked layer and started.  I found that thinner brushes and brushes that use pressure to vary width are very jagged.  I went through different settings and ensured that my performance --> view quality was set to Bilinear (Best Quality) and at this point I am at a loss.  I need to be able to use fine lines.  Is this something that is not possible with AF Designer at this time? Is it because I have brought in a PNG file from a different software and it is reacting to it even though it is locked?

I have enclosed a screen shot in hopes that maybe someone can point out my errors or perhaps offer some suggestions,

Hi, QueenofHyperbole,

You are using the "vectorbrush," a name which often confuses new users. If the "brush" is from the basic category, it is pure vector, and will change size and opacity, but it will not have a texture.  But what it can do is stretch or repeat a bitmap along a vector, which is what you are seeing.

Some notes. The brush variability needs to be turned on, and the amount and response to pressure or velocity can be set thru the brush editing dialogue. Also, the pressure variations can be set or tweaked from the objects stroke dialogue. I have a number of stroke pressures saved as styles, so I can easily assign the way the stokes changes shape. For example, fat to start, and trail off, or bulge in the center.

So the vector brush is extremely basic in its vectorising capabilities and anything more complex than a circle is a raster image on a vector path (Curve) because you can't make brushes with a vector file format like SVG, IA or EPS.
