Table fixed width/variable width option

If I insert a row in a table the following rows move down. That's fine. But if I insert a column then all the other columns shrink in size to leave the table width the same. I know this is intentional but I think it is not normal, so I'd like to have an option somewhere to allow the table width to increase so all the other columns don't change size.
