I haven't this been suggested before. I think it would be pretty useful to have pie menus for quick tool switching. I haven't seen this in image editors, but I think it's pretty common for 3d modeling:

 

 

In this app, for example, you can customize them to have multiple levels, you can have quick color selections, etc. I think it allows for very a very quick access to common options.

Yes, all things which make the handling, the GUI... more fast and efficient should be a big goal for 1.8. So many things so long-windowed, mouse-mile-instensive, click-intensive...

Whenever possible use a direct-selector instead a hamburger-dropdown like in the new HSL isntead this long-windowed hamburger-chooser in eg. Curves.

Give us an uniform-preset-editor (styles, brushes, macros.....) for move, delete, rename, reorder... batch wise with sub-categories... give us rightclick for tools (eg. fast flow-setting for brushes, or color-dynamic... whatever i have set to appear here...)...

I wish the focus of 1.8 would be: improve the overall userfriendly!
