R C-R
It looks like the 'Use only integrated GPU' option overwrites the "Display:" popup menu: All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 Affinity Photo 1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.
catlover
Seems it has to do with the fontsize. Here's a screenshot of the message, fontsize set to "Large" (on Retina,27")
Polygonius
Also with fontsize = small However, i can live with that. For more intersting is, what will it do???? Is this a good choice for my GPU? OSX 12.5 / iMac Retina 27" / Radeon Pro 580X / Metall: on! --- WWG1WGA WW!

My screenshot is what I see with the smaller "Default" Font UI Size setting. With that set to "Large" I also get two overlapping "(requires restart)" items, but either way, there is no popup Display menu so I don't know if the display is being rendered using Open GL, Metal, or what; nor is there any way to change it. Since the Designer beta & the 1.6.x version of Photo does show a functional Display popup menu, I assume this is a bug in the Photo beta & not anything that has to do with my older iMac's ability to use Metal display rendering. catlover
When I use the "Small" setting, all's well, but very tight. When I use the "Default", letters crunch up, same as with "Large". I guess it might be the size of the dialog box itself, should be wider ??

When you use that setting, immediately to the right of where it shows "Display:" do you see a checkbox or a popup menu like this one in the Designer beta? catlover
No checkbox, no popup. Here are the screenshots: Both are of the Betas.

So you are seeing the same problem with the Display popup as I am in the Photo but not in the Designer beta, right? Do you agree that it isn't just a problem with the size of the window or of the display text size but that except for the second instance of the "(requires restart)" text, the popup menu is completely missing in the Photo beta? catlover
@R C-R Indeed, popup menu completely missing. Perhaps there's something in the code that searches for the hardware configuration, so you don't get to see the popup if the hardware doesn't match. IMO the crunched up letters is a matter of the size of the dialog box ?? Anyway, I'm sure the devs will find a fix, haven't seen any comment from them though. Is there a special section to report Beta-Bugs ???

Any update on this? I just installed the new 105 build & nothing has changed in this respect, other than in the updated built-in help in the last few beta builds it just says this: Display—If your Mac has an additional discrete graphics card, checking the Use only integrated GPU will not allow access to it, therefore reducing power consumption and conserving battery life (useful for unplugged MacBook Pros). Compare that to the same entry in the Designer Beta: Display—Choose whether to use hardware acceleration such as Metal, OpenGL or OpenGL (Basic), or use Software acceleration. If your computer experiences performance problems, use the above option order until performance is acceptable. Metal requires Sierra macOS (10.12.x) and above, with Affinity optimised for High Sierra 10.13.x) and above. If your Mac has an additional discrete graphics card, checking the Use only integrated GPU will not allow access to it, therefore reducing power consumption and conserving battery life (useful for unplugged MacBook Pros). The 1.6 retail versions of both apps & the Affinity Publisher beta all say the same thing in their help topic as in the Designer beta, & all have the same Display options; which makes me wonder if the Photo beta help topic is suggesting that the Display options were removed intentionally. Staff MEB Posted December 12, 2018 Staff Share Posted December 12, 2018 Hi R C-R, Yes, the removal of the display options from Photo is intentional. All is working (and displaying in Preferences) as intended now. A Guide to Learning Affinity Software | Affinity Quick Reference

All is working (and displaying in Preferences) as intended now. Since there are no options anymore, can you tell me (or is there any way to check) which method is used for display hardware acceleration? For example, if I am running El Capitan on a Mac, since that OS version does not support metal, which (if any) hardware acceleration method is used? Also, does this mean that eventually the display option will be removed from the 1.7 version of Designer & from Publisher before the retail version is released?
