Hi all.

They will become visible once you make some more changes. Basically, they get updated on the next step you take. So you if have just brushed, you will not see them until you brush again or so another change to the image.

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
What you are expecting to see is the thumbnail displaying the painted black parts in relation to the whole image size proportionately, however the mask thumbnail only displays the are  area occupied by the mask itself as it it were a single "object". You can check this easily if you paint a small rectangle on the mask on the left top corner of the image area for example - the mask's thumbnail will only display a black rectangle as if the rest of the  image space to the bottom and left didn't exist. Although a little less intuitive this is working as designed. If you want to see the mask as a greyscale image, press and hold ⌥ (option/alt) and click the mask's thumbnail in the Layers panel.
