Stroke/thin line on the inside of text, away from edge in Affinity Designer ??

Recommended Posts

Using Affinity Designer, I want to create a thin stroke/line effect around the inside of my name typed in a heavy font (Aardvark), so the line is a few pixels away from the edges. I've tried a few things that haven't worked and need some suggestions. Can it even be done?

Hello Ballyshannon,

Try this: type your name, apply an "Outline" fx set to "Inside" in black of the thickness you want for the position of your black line.

Right-click on the text, "Group".

Then apply a second fx "Outline" also set to "Inside" of the color of your text and adjust its thickness until you obtain the desired thickness for your internal black line. You can play with the thicknesses of both fx to achieve the desired effect.

I think that rounding is impossible to avoid, there is no way to adjust the mitre like for a normal contour.  To limit this, put a normal outline to the text when you type it (the same color as the internal thread) and then proceed as described above. Adjust the thickness of the different contours to achieve what you want.

The result will not be perfect because there will always be a roundness due to the fx but it will be located inside and no longer outside the tips, so a little less visible.

I've done an alternative way using 2 layers of text, this keeps the corners sharp, adjust the bottom text stroke to get a thicker or thinner line.

So basically the top layer is text with an Orange stroke of 0.5mm no fill, the bottom layer is text with a Black stroke of 0.7mm and an Orange fill.

Hello firstdefence,

Very nice alternative, I had focused on using a single instance of text....

You inspired me ;) I thought there's got to be a way to do this :D

The outline fx is pretty clunky and should be replaced with an fx that can apply multiple strokes that would be a much better fx oh and a pattern fx.

Agreed. Along with other suggestions to make the program even better, this would be very helpful and welcome.

"-Multiple Effects/Fills/Strokes per shape" appears on the Affinity Designer roadmap, so eventually we should have that. Not sure if that would include pattern effects as such but it might make them easier to create....
