John Anderson Posted June 26, 2019 Share Posted June 26, 2019 It is worth noting that if you are using WordPress it does not currently let you upload webp format. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
All Media Lab Posted June 26, 2019 Author Share Posted June 26, 2019 Nonsense! There are several plugins for the use of webp in Wordpress like https://wordpress.org/plugins/webp-express/ Seems like there are always people looking for arguments against good ideas for future development of Affinity like webp. We are using webp in every website we create including Wordpress for years now. All major browsers can work with webp except for Safari therefore we use a jpg fallback. Only for Google & Co and SEO reasons you are a fool when you don't implement it in your website. Example: A cross browser background image (unfortunately not possible to create in Affinity Photo without the use of a webp converter): <picture> <source media="(max-width: 475px) and (orientation: portrait)" type="image/webp" data-sizes="auto" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" data-srcset=" Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Phone-webp/home-back-phone_vsimc2_c_scale%2Cw_480.webp 480w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Phone-webp/home-back-phone_vsimc2_c_scale%2Cw_905.webp 905w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Phone-webp/home-back-phone_vsimc2_c_scale%2Cw_1200.webp 1200w" class="lazyload"> <source media="(max-width: 475px) and (orientation: portrait)" data-sizes="auto" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" data-srcset=" Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Phone-jpg/home-back-phone_vsimc2_c_scale%2Cw_480.jpg 480w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Phone-jpg/home-back-phone_vsimc2_c_scale%2Cw_905.jpg 905w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Phone-jpg/home-back-phone_vsimc2_c_scale%2Cw_1200.jpg 1200w" class="lazyload"> <source media="(min-width: 476px) and (orientation: portrait)" type="image/webp" data-sizes="auto" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" data-srcset=" Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Tablets-webp/home-back-tablet_asvcpy_c_scale%2Cw_768.webp 768w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Tablets-webp/home-back-tablet_asvcpy_c_scale%2Cw_1213.webp 1213w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Tablets-webp/home-back-tablet_asvcpy_c_scale%2Cw_1536.webp 1536w" class="lazyload"> <source media="(min-width: 476px) and (orientation: portrait)" data-sizes="auto" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" data-srcset=" Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Tablets-jpg/home-back-tablet_asvcpy_c_scale%2Cw_768.jpg 768w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Tablets-jpg/home-back-tablet_asvcpy_c_scale%2Cw_1213.jpg 1213w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-Tablets-jpg/home-back-tablet_asvcpy_c_scale%2Cw_1536.jpg 1536w" class="lazyload"> <source media="(max-width: 4800px)" type="image/webp" data-sizes="auto" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" data-srcset=" Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-webp/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_500.webp 500w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-webp/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_1656.webp 1656w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-webp/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_2400.webp 2400w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-webp/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_3007.webp 3007w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-webp/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_3516.webp 3516w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-webp/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_3840.webp 3840w" class="lazyload"> <img data-sizes="auto" srcset="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" data-srcset=" Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-jpg/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_500.jpg 500w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-jpg/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_1656.jpg 1656w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-jpg/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_2400.jpg 2400w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-jpg/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_3007.jpg 3007w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-jpg/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_3516.jpg 3516w, Responsive-Images/Home/back-home/bg-wide-jpg/home-back-wide_q1epvc_c_scale%2Cw_3840.jpg 3840w" class="lazyload" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==" alt="Full Screen achtergrondfoto met woonamer, daarin een bankstel met Wil Art kussens en schilderijen aan de muur"> </picture> Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

All Media Lab Posted August 21, 2019 Author Share Posted August 21, 2019 Because de staff of Serif don't have a clue what is going on in modern web development! Or maybe they don't want to support Google I don't know? For the time being I convert with https://www.xnview.com/en/xnconvert/ they have an excellent converter with webp for free or donation. cirkē and arnofly 1 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

All Media Lab Posted August 21, 2019 Author Share Posted August 21, 2019 Are you the lawyer of Serif? Nobody ever said that Serif declared to implement webp! If you are not interested in webp as a new feature of Affinity Photo spend your time elsewhere and keep your negative input for your self. Users want webp implementation because it's used in modern webdesign and it makes the workflow easier! Did purchased Sketch a couple of months ago that has webp export to use aside Affinity. Using any new file format does not mean to "have a clue" – and vice versa. It even might mean to have a clue by NOT jumping into every available technology fashion. Is All Media Lab besides WebP (or even instead?) using HEIF/HEIC or FLIF or BPG or PIK etc.? They all might become – but don't have to – a standard because of advantages towards WebP. macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
All Media Lab Posted August 21, 2019 Author Share Posted August 21, 2019 We use webp and jpg fallback treated with jpegMini and GZip compression on the server! The issue is that webp is used by webdesigners and works on any browser except for Safari so export webp in Affinity is common sense for us. 70% of my users use Chrome mobile or desktop so the choice is simple. thomaso Posted August 21, 2019 Share Posted August 21, 2019 You might convince people rather by linking to a statistic of the spread/use of your desired WebP – just mentioning that you/your company does use it in any or many or all of your work is hardly a relevant aspect for developers. With such thoughts this discussion can't result in the implementation of WebP. I care because I am missing an argument which might convince the Affinity developers. Just saying "we use it" or "it is modern" or even everybody is using it is very vague and not clear about the real usage and spread of this format. macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
