here is an example of photo from lightroom on PC:

question1.thumb.png.3d114c9377aada2f2bef10a3b94f6af5.png

here is the same photo imported into Ipad pro 12.9 and opend in Affinity photo.

question2.thumb.PNG.a742b4f00a20077192b6f2369225f16f.PNG

on the both photos i have pulled up the shadows to the 100%.

the question is: why affinity photo automatically applied Luminance \ noise reduction on my photo?

I bought ipad pro 12.9 512GB for $ 1000 to edit photos on it.
But now I understand that this is impossible.

Why do you automatically apply any settings to RAW photos?

Hi Nesteroff,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Affinity Photo for iPad relies on iOS system level support - Apple (Core Image RAW) - to convert/process RAW's. We don't have much control over noise reduction or other processing done here. The only thing you can do is turn off the RAW Tone Curve applied to the image (in Photo Persona tap the Document icon and select Assistant - check the two bottom rows for available settings/options).

@Nesteroff Do you get the same result with Lightroom on the iPad?

Uhmmm....., is your camera supported by apple's raw engine. Nothing to do with Serif.

Can you upload a raw file that won't open. Mods can test and or get devs to check what is happening.

Lets do it!

Look: : this photo i took from under my bed.
there was really dark place.

Options which i use in lightroom:

  • TEMP: 2300
  • TINT: -13
  • EXPOSURE: +3
  • SHADOWS: +100

that what i see in lightroom on PC:

and here is a ZOOm in screenshot:

you can see that little tiny pieces of hairs on my slippers, and a lot of details.

AND HERE IS WHAT I SAW ON IPAD PRO:

full image with the same settings:

ZOOM in pic with less shadows:

A little difference, right? :D

AFFINITY ON PC WITH THE SAME SETTINGS:

i was trying to synchronize the output view of the photo and here is affinity vs lightroom on pc:

The screenshots seem to show the PC is running Windows, and for the desktop applications the Apple raw engine is available only on MacOS.

when I started my investigation, I didn’t know that it would all end in confrontation lightroom and affinity.

but as we can see, lightroom on pc and ipad shows better results than affinity.

PC AND IPAD LIGHTROOM - almost the same result.

AFFINITY - very bad.

affinity-vs-lightroom.thumb.jpg.3036c64afc5600c0dc7bad563c76cf15.jpg

so the conclusion is:

1. ipad can be used like a PRO instrument for raw editing.

2. affinity not for pro it is a marketing bubble.

// for russian-speaking followers:

1. ipad можно использовать как про инструмент для редактирования raw файлов.

2. affinity как мы видим, показал ужасные результаты и является не более чем маркетинговым пузырём.

Hm, this is in many ways an  'extreme' picture: 2300 kelvin, and as far as I can tell, taken in almost complete darkness. LR does a better job here, but does not mean Affinity Photo is a 'scam'.

Instead of copying LR settings to Affinity, I would tweak optimum settings in Affinity Photo for optimal result. Don't compare apples with pears, pun intended...

Apples raw conversion engine (used by affinity) is the issue here. You should be complaining to Apple to improve their handling of raw in these extreme examples. Affinity might also consider providing option to use a raw converter as used in Lightroom?

This issue is specific to Sony A7-A9 series raw files. I’ve also brought this issue up several months back, and it has still not been addressed. Affinity photo is useless for Sony Alpha camera users who wish to edit raw photos, it’s simply broken.
