Do Masks actually have any purpose in publisher?

Recommended Posts

Since they do not function the same way as photoshop masks at all, IDD does not need them, I am finding no use for them in anything I try.  I can perform gradient and transparency actions without them, if i need to punch a hole through to the bottom layer I am better off doing that in photoshop first for better accuracy, If I want to partially cover an image and gradate its flow into or onto another image upon which I will place text I am better off doing that in photoshop first.

So to help me understand their purpose I would like others to tell me exactly what they are using them for?  If you would be so kind. Thankyou.

Microsoft - Like entering your home and opening the stainless steel kitchen door, with a Popup: 'Do you really want to open this door'? Then looking for the dishwasher and finding it stored in the living room where you have to download a water supply from the app store, then you have to buy microsoft compliant soap, remove the carpet only to be told that it is glued to the floor.. Don't forget to make multiple copies of your front door key and post them to all who demand access to all the doors inside your home including the windows and outside shed.

Apple - Like entering your home and opening the oak framed Kitchen door and finding the dishwasher right in front you ready to be switched on, soap supplied, and water that comes through a water softener.  Ah the front door key is yours and it only needs to open the front door.

Maybe you won't understand the mask layers until the personas are working ...

Bear in mind that Photo, Designer and Publisher will share a common file format.  Since Photo and Designer both benefit from this feature (significantly), Publisher needs to be able to represent and work with masks that are set up in those programs if a file is brought in from one of them.  It also provides added consistency with the other two programs for people who get used to working with masks in those tools.

If you want something useful to do with them in Publisher, try using text as a mask for a picture...
