Tex4aviation Posted October 24, 2018 Share Posted October 24, 2018 I can not use Affinity Photo anymore. With my new Camera NIKON D850 I get huge data files. I work on a i5 processor 250MB SSD and 8MB RAM. Should I buy a new computer just for that? I must say that I work now only with ACDsee 2018 and the workflow is much faster and have no problems with this software, so it could not be the processor or the RAM. What is the problem with this program? Also I wonder why Lenses and Cameras are not available, or did I not find it? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

v_kyr Posted October 24, 2018 Share Posted October 24, 2018 See: Even we talked there primary about the APh Mac version it should behave similar for Win with the Affinity RAW engine. - If certain lenses are supported depends on their addition to the Lensfun database and the database version included by APh versions. Other than that you need to have some patience, since as you already know the D850 NEF files are huge and the APh RAW converter part isn't the fastest in reading in and transforming these. The software works also with other files very slow. So again my question. v_kyr Posted October 24, 2018 Share Posted October 24, 2018 First of all check how much RAM is used on your system when opening D850 NEF files with APh, there are chances that enhancing that also slightly speeds up things. Other than that, AFAIK the Affinity products do benefit more from having many CPU cores, than from raw GPU power at all. So the overall hint for a Win based PC system would be ... For example i7-4750HQ means a 4th generation i7. 6 GB is a very small size, I would recommend minimum 8 GB RAM and up. Also, 6gb RAM , imo, maybe is just me, but looks to me way way low for the purpose pretended (probably is also 2133 MHz RAM speed or less, too), maybe RAM speed has some influence, too (neither know if latency, as well). Often are not just components alone... is also BUS speed, cpu cache speed, etc... the price of a machine versus another implies too many factors. Indeed, there are many cases where even (random non real example) a dual core i3, at higher clock speed, ie 1.8 Ghz, is gonna be quite slower than even a dual core i5 at 1.6. As the architecture, mother board features, CPU functions, etc, do factor in heavily. About ACDSee, it depends on what it does with the files, or what structure must it have to do further stuff with those, I guess...What I don't fully understand is... if it goes so well for you with ACDSee, why willing to purchase A. Quite frustrating as ACDsee is more expensive. But AF has more interesting features. There is one hughe advantage in ACDsee, I can browse in RAW/NEF Files. AF can't do that, so you need anyway a RAW preview software. So it must have something in the software code that slows thing dramatically with AF. ACDSee is a more focused app than Affinity Photo, so Affinity Photo has a wider artistic appeal. Tex4aviation Posted October 28, 2018 Author Share Posted October 28, 2018 Thats absolutely correct, I miss the artistic side in ACDs and would really apreciate if AF would refresh their source code and think about it. Even people very brand new computers complain about the speed of AF.
