Sharing Photo in Export Mode Crashes HELP?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I bought Affinity on my Ipad whilst travelling the world, now I am saving them and exporting to my Mac via export > share > airdrop

Ideally, I want to have 16-Bit but it crashes and doesn't do anything, does anyone have any tips? I can do 8- bit but I'm a keen photographer and want more colour options as it's for landscape.

Thanks in advance.

How exactly are you accessing airdrop via Affinity Photo Export Share? I'm unable to get it listed so can't test on my iPad. I can airdrop from iOS Camera roll. Silly me, couldn’t see the wood for the trees. :$

What file format are you airdropping?

M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB   lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen).
Affinity Photo 1.10.5 Affinity Design 1.10.5
Affinity Publisher 2, Affinity Designer 2, Affinity Photo 2 and betas.

I’m experiencing constant crashes when trying to export to camera roll.

I have two 10.5 iPad Pros. The first one works great. No crashes. The second one crashes every time I try to export an image to the camera roll. Same model iPads, same exact files. One works great, the other crashes every time.

Ive tried deleting Affinity Designer from the crashy iPad and reinstalling. Same story. Any ideas?

@Goosekeeper Go into iPad Settings, scroll down the list of apps till you see Photo app tap it and on the right of screen check access to Photos (iOS)  is set to read and write. Same for Designer.

When does the crash occur and which file type are you selecting on the Export screen. I've just tested using Airdrop with a 155MB 16Bit TIFF and it worked fine to my iMac.

Also, I’m not getting a no-access message, just getting a black-out crash.

Hi Goosekeeper, it is better to start a new thread rather than tag onto an existing problem thread. The mods here may miss your question.

Try opening a photo from the iOS photos/Camera Roll using Designer on the problematic iPad. This should then bring up the Photos icon in Settings. Then make sure it is set to read and write. :)

Hi DM1, I am in Affinity photo, going to 2nd icon in from the top of the screen *** piece of paper and 3 dots > Export > selecting TIFF RGB 16-bit then bottom lefthand corner there is "Share" airdrop from there. As mentioned I can do 8bit but 16bit doesn't do anything... I looked at my settings on my Ipad under "Photo" from your photo above and the setting is read and write, any more suggestions? do you if there is any other way of moving high-quality photos across to my MAC without losing quality?

Hi Lee, Please see comment I sent to DM1 > there's a video, just doesn't do anything? 8 bit TIFF works but 16 bit or 32bit bit HDR doesn't work? any suggestions?

You nailed it. Very much appreciated.

I think the “would like to access photos” dialogue should appear when trying to save for the first time, rather than crashing out the app. But your clever way around that was perfect! Thanks again!

do I have to buy the desktop version for this to work more smoothly?

No. You should be able to airdrop the file without affinity on the Mac. As Lee stated he transferred a 155mb file. Yours is only 37mb.

An alternative to airdrop would be to use Documents (a free app from Readdle). It’s a powerful file manager and also has a feature to make it simple to set up a wireless connection to a pc/Mac for wireless file transfers.  https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/documents-by-readdle/id364901807?mt=8

Perhaps you could upload the file to Lee D, one of the mods here, for further testing. The problem may be tied to the file as a bug currently exists in iPad Photos when making panoramas.

I would see first if you can save the 16bit tiff file to your camera roll and airdrop from there.

On a separate note, their is a very good 'infill' macro for the iPad that would do an excellent job of filling in the transparent portions of you panorama. You can do it manually but the macro is very good and simple to use . It is in the macros file below Muds Macros (credit to PMuddit). The one to use is the 'Inpaint Cropped Areas' macro.

Lastly, your iPad has a screen recording function that is very useful for recording what you do on the iPad for posting here. Just drag a finger down from top right of screen to bring up the control centre and tap the little icon with the white circle. Drag it back up to remove the control centre. Complete your steps in Photo, drag down on the top right corner to bring back console and tap the, now red, button icon to stop recording. Recordings are saved in camera roll and tap the click to chose file link to attach the video. I attached a short sample showing how to stop recording. :)

Photo and airdrop should do what you want so persevere in getting it sorted.

Thanks DM1, i’ve Added the screen recording, that’s extremly handy thanks!

I have also added the “Mud Macros” but only go half on the list? How do you get the Macros, I only have default?

I have tried saving the photo to my IPad, doesn’t work - cant get any further (see videos)

Sorry, I think I attached the wrong one. :$ He added a later release but as  I can't see inside the files to find out what macros are contained and I can't export the one I use from my iPad I took a guess (and picked the wrong one!).

I have another file called MudsMacros1 which 'may/should' incorporate the missing macros. 9_9

When sharing try tapping the save image button. This saves straight to the iOS photos camera roll.  See screen vid. Also if you go into Photo setting and turn on 'Show Touches', then when you record the screen we can see the selections you make in the recording.

@LL26 Try opening Files, tap edit and deselect the 'on my iPad' button. Close the files app completely. Now open Files app again and tap edit. Reselect the 'on my iPad' button.  Now when exporting does it still fail to Save to Files button?

Ok, getting closer.... I’ve now got “paint cropped” macro your see my photo has changed :D thanks!

[outside question how do you get the rest? E.g. light leaks, image styles etc?]

i’ve turned on show touches and I can save 16bit to camera roll; doesn’t like 32bit... just goes black or white

(these are SLR photographs been stitched together in Panaroma mode)

I can save to files now but still can’t airdrop anything more than 8bit (wont take 16 or 32bit straight from sharing, and I’ve just tried from files to airdrop over and won’t work on 16/32 bit)

See videos
