Clone brush tool doesn’t clone accurately

Recommended Posts

Hi,

When using the clone brush, the cloned bit doesn’t end up corresponding exactly to the original bit...

It is extremely annoying as it makes the overall cloned bit much smoother.

As you can see on the attached image, regardless to the hardness of the brush the results are both disappointing. Both were made with opacity at 100% .

Any ideas how to solve this?

Thank you.

Looks ok here. Top circle is original. Bottom is cloned.

Can you make a screen recording showing your settings and post here.

Which brush do you have assigned to the clone tool? You also have pressure setting turned on (little symbol on the right with the blue circle around it). That may effect brush intensity.

I tried selecting a hard brush, painting a circle and then using clone tool to copy. I can’t see any difference between them.

could you attach your file and I’ll see if I get the same effect as you.

@twtw Hi, I've used your file and created a copy layer for working on. You can see my Clone tool settings. I am using the 'round' brush from the supplied Basic category. I have set (assigned)  this brush to be my Clone brush. When brushes are assigned there names show (I find this helpful - but a little off topic). :)

The screen video shows me cloning different parts of your image. First a rectangle and then a dotted line. I have zoomed right in on each of the cloned areas to show the pixel sharpness.

@twtw I suspect it is an issue with the brush settings assigned to the clone tool. I can't see what brush you have selected with the clone tool.

Try setting a hard round brush as the default 'Clone' brush. All this does is assign that brush whenever you pick the Clone tool.

The attached video shows how to do this. The attached photo shows a black painted background with a white 1 pixel wide line painted with the pixel brush, as you did in your screen video. I then selected my clone tool and 'cloned' a section of the pixel line, making a perfect copy. This suggests it is a setting and not a shortcoming in AP.  Please try setting up the brush as shown and see if that works for you. :)

What, you have a 'feature' no one else has. Gotta be positive. :D

Have to admit I'm out of my depth. Brush shouldn’t make a difference but setting it the same as mine just eliminates brush issues.

I can see you have a problem and you can see I don't, when doing exactly the same thing. At least you know that the app IS capable of accurate cloning. I'm assuming you are running an iOS release version and NOT a beta? That may cause issues. I'm running 12.1.

Grabbing at straws now...

1. If using an Apple Pencil maybe check the tip is tight and in good condition. Better yet try a new tip or borrow another AP.

2. Try turning off Touch for Gestures in Settings. Then try cloning using your finger instead of the pencil. (That will rule out pencil issues).

3. If it is still not cloning properly, Uninstall/Reinstall app (drastic but sometimes it helps). Save any files you don’t wish to lose before taking this step.

4. Pull out remaining hair, smash device, jump up and down while yelling loudly ..... Er, Maybe better to give step 4 a miss. 9_9

@Lee D Can mods offer any assistance further assistance here. I'm out of ideas.

@twtw I notice in the screen shot for your clone brush settings that the brush outline is very fuzzy. Compare that to the clone  brush outline for my brush, which is very sharp.

Except deleting and reinstalling the app I did everything and nothing worked. I do think it might be the only thing that could work, but since I am currently working on a big project and I don’t want anything funny to happen with my files, I will try to do it once I finish it and update later. If it won’t work I will report a bug.

As for the brush edges, its simply the hardness. But I tried doing it with sharp edges and it didn’t work either.

Thank you for your help! I’ll update soon.

Hi,

A few months have passed already since I reported this bug. Now, after uninstalling and reinstalling the app, resetting all the parameters, the bug persists...

It is very unusual I couldn’t read about anyone else reporting the same issue, it seems absurd I am the only user that encountered this problem. The software is up to date and the iPad I am using is the 2017 iPad Pro...

Is there anything else I can do?

Thank you.

We are all waiting for the next release v1.7. Maybe that will be better for you. :/

I’ve got the same behaviour too on an iPad pro, 13 inches with iPadOS 13.1 .

This seems to apply to all cloning / pasting tools, including the healing brush, the clone tool and the patch tool.

I believe the issue Twtw and me have is a lack of the `force pixel alignment` option for those tools on the ipad app (or it is well-hidden enough that I could not find it).

(See link for a discussion for the desktop app).

Could this function be added to the app?

For certain editing tasks like greyscale-images with patterns this is a huge drawback compared to apps with pixel-perfect copy-pasting.
