Splitting tables

My apologies if this has already been covered.

In PP it is possible to split a table if it becomes to large for the space by using an arrow icon at the bottom the table.

So far, APub, I have been unable to find a way of splitting tables that become too long.  Does this feature exist in APub or am I looking in vain?

I would need that, too. A similar behaviour like in MS Word where table headers automatically repeat when the table is spread over more than one page.

This is important for many catalogs/price lists, that often use a table like layout to hold product data.

The only way I can find to do this is to put the whole table on each page, and then delete rows. This is totally unsatisfactory, of course.

Does anyone have a better way? I can find nothing in help.

You could save the complete table body without separators as separate document and put it inside a picture frame with your 'actual' table as overlay, then adjust to the portion you need.

Obviously this is limited in use and most likely requires more adjustments but this way you can at least edit/update the content as a whole in your referenced/embedded file

without manually juggling rows on X amount of pages in your final design

It is such a shame that Serif spent so many years improving and adding functionality to Publisher and are not developing some of the most useful functionality for their new offering.

Much as I like some of the new things that Affinity can do, I really do miss the basic things that it cannot do.

They still are developing Publisher. They can't do everything all at the same time, and have to prioritize what features get developed (or further developed) on what schedule.

1.7 was the first release, just over a year ago (June, 2019).

1.8 (second major release, February, 2020) added Preflight checking, IDML import, XLSX import, document merge, smart master pages, Collect, and more. Many were heavily requested features.

1.9 (third major release, currently in beta) has so far added: PDF Passthrough, PDF Bookmarks, conversion of pixel layers to Image layers, configurable bleed and margin guide colors, and more. Again, many of these are heavily requested. And it's still early in the 1.9 beta, with more new features to be revealed when they're ready for our testing.

Hi, I do understand that Publisher is still under development, and much of the new functionality is very welcome.

My disappointment is that there was so much functionality in PagePlus that was there because users deemed it to be of high priority at the time, and it was this functionality that made PagePlus the best programme of its type out there.  I know that PagePlus is still able to be used, but I am surprised that those things that made it stand out don't have a higher priority in the development of Publisher.

I only hope that they do find their way into the programme at some point and don't just get lost.

And how many years had it taken Serif to develop that functionality?

That's the main point, I think. It's unfair to compare a program (PagePlus) that had been developed over the course of 30 years with a program (Publisher) that has only been in development for somewhere between 2 and 5 years.

It is surprising that so few people have contributed to this thread, as I continue to find the inability to split  (or join) tables quite a problem. I get round this by creating a table, finding how many rows fit in the space available, then go back to my original Excel source and split the Excel sheet, so that I can then import the correct number of rows to fill the space, before proceeding to the next page and doing the same all over again to find out how many rows of the Excel sheet will fit on the new page. This is very iterative, time-consuming and prone to error.

I have come back to it just now as I am in the process of updating an annual report, which will incorporate some of the tables from the 2020 report as well as a host of new tables.

I take Walt's point that Serif cannot incorporate every desired fucntionality "overnight". Perhaps Affinity could confirm that this feature is on their "to-do" list, even if they tend not to promise a particular target date. Compared to some of the specialist features introuduced recently, I would have thought that the ability to split and join tables would be relatively easy to implement - but then, I am not a practicing programmer!

I'm using Publisher v2 and that facility is still not available.

This appears to have been swept under the carpet.

I bought the Affinity 2 suite as soon as it was announced, because I thought "surely that must include a way to split tables by now". I checked and as for AnaliseThis of course the facility is still not there. Please could Affinity confirm that this is on their "to do" list. The ability to join tables would also be useful, of course.

1. Splitting tables is easy. I think you mean having tables flow across multiple pages (which is what people want)

2. Joining 2 (or more) similar tables is also easy. You just run into problems if the table then ends up too big to fit on one page

Yes, it is the ability for a table to flow across multiple pages that I require - for example, when importing a large table from Excel.

If this is easy, please could you let us know how to do it? It could be that I am missing a trick!
