OpenType features destroy font metrics

Recommended Posts

Affinity Publisher 1.7.0.139 on Windows 7 (64bit, German) behaves as follows:

  • Create a text with a font that supports several OpenType features like stylistic sets. The screenshot was done with 'TheSans E4s' by known font designer Lucas de Groot.
  • With no OpenType feature used, the text always behaves properly.
  • With certain OpenType features enabled, the metrics of corresponding characters become garbled, so that the resulting text is sometimes unusable.

For reference, the screenshot shows shaded fields and blue text frames. Here some remarks concerning the image:

  1. The 1st and 2nd line use 'normal' text, and everything's fine.
  2. The 3rd and 4th line use 'ss11' and, by some mysterious reason, though both lines contain the same text, the line with the date field contains too much space behind the '1'.
  3. When checking the '1' in right-aligned text, the ss11 version suddenly doesn't have too much space behind it, but appears to have negative metrics at the right, so that it overlaps the frame.
  4. Checking the same with differently styled  versions of the 'Q' character produces the same error: The 'normal' Q is correct, any of the styled versions has negative metrics.

This definitely seems to be a bug in Publisher, because every other software I tried does this correctly. Affinity Designer 1.6.5.123 also yields correct results (no additional white space, proper alignment). If Publisher and Designer use the same code base for OpenType support, please revert Publisher to Designer's correct behaviour.

Hi Chris,

you will find similar metrics issues with nearly all Adobe fonts (Arno Pro, Adobe Text Pro, Adobe Garamond Pro, Adobe Caslon Pro, etc.) when selecting certain number styles on the Mac. I guess you have a bunch of them on your hard drive. Don’t know if this is the same issue. Just wanted to mention. Alex :)

Hi Andreas Weidner

If this is specific to a stylistic set in this font than we may need you to provide the font. You can upload it using this link. If it also happens with other fonts are you able to list some for us to try?

Thanks

Simply put, APub is broken just like my post you wanted the font for. There are several posts about this issue in the forum from different people.

These combinations work in AD, at least all the fonts I tried.

Please find attached an Affinity Publisher file as demonstration of the Metrics havoc. The file uses the fonts Consolas and Calibri, both bundled with Windows 7, and both even from the same Font Designer as the previously mentioned 'TheSans'. The following problems can be seen:

  • For right-aligned text, more or less all enabled features produce 100% negative metrics for the last character in every line.
  • For left-aligned text, special functions like automatic numbering or fields produce too large white space to the right of numbers with enabled features. If used as standard text, the metrics seem to be OK.
