Getting Out of Text Mode

Recommended Posts

In Photoshop, when in text mode there is a checkmark next to the Type settings that you can click when you're done editing text to easily exit from text mode.

How do I do this in Affinity Photo? Only way I discovered is to switch over to the pointer tool. Is that the only way to do that in AP?

On Windows you can also click outside the text area, or press Esc.

Also note: Don't Press V to try and select the Move tool you'll just end up with lots of V's

I press Esc then V to get back to the Move tool, easiest method I've found

Okay, ESC works, but to me using that key is counter-intuitive, it usually means to abort the process. In Photoshop if you hit ESC to get out of the text box you just created, the text box and text disappear as if you hit the Cancel button, which is more intuitive (to me, at least). If you are editing text, pressing ESC cancels just those edits.

Yes, I discovered that! Kept pressing V and just getting a lot of Vs in my text box.

I notice that some processes you do in AP have an Apply and Cancel button. It would be great if it that was consistent for all processes, including adding/editing text.

I would strongly dislike having to find an Apply or Cancel button every time I was editing or entering text.

Same for me. One of the things I like most about Affinity is it does not clutter up the UI with Apply & Cancel buttons when there is no need for them.

It might be nice most of the time, but not if you wanted to create another text object immediately after the first one.

That's why it should be the default behavior, no ? ;)

No it should not, because the next tool one wanted to use could be anything, not just the Move Tool.

But if that is what you want, try double-clicking on an empty part of the workspace window.

You could set F1 instead "v" for move-tool, so you have booth keys together! (at least on my keyboard). I have most of my "tools" set to F-keysz so i can switch much faster.

Well, Affinity Photo uses Apply and Cancel buttons on a bunch of various functions already, but it's not consistent.

Oddly, pressing Enter doesn't automatically choose Apply, and pressing ESC doesn't cancel the current operation, but it should. So you're forced to click on the Apply or Cancel button if they appear for that function with no keyboard shortcut.

Those buttons appear for destructive operations but not nondestructive ones. That is consistent with the idea of not cluttering up the UI with them when they are not needed (since nondestructive operations can be removed or changed at any time).

As for pressing the Enter (or Return) key or the Escape key, that works if the window with the buttons in it are the focus of the UI (the window is frontmost). This is consistent with Mac OS developer guidelines -- only the frontmost window should respond to those system level keyboard inputs.
