Importing Styles and Application Palettes from Designer on Destop to iPad

Recommended Posts

I've searched for specific answers but have come up empty handed on how to get styles and application palettes from Designer on the desktop imported to Designer on the iPad. When I attempt to import styles from a cloud stored file, the respective .AFSTLYES file is grayed out.

I don't see a way to import application palettes, (or create one from an image or document, which would work also). I know you can access a document palette, but you can't save that to the system palettes so that doesn't work if you want to use that palette on another document.

Is there a reason why this isn't possible? Is there some limitation from being on an iPad that keeps these features from being on the roadmap?

Styles on iOS seems a little broken. It used to import but with latest version I cannot import either. It may be my file. I was able to save an afstyles file in the Files app, then open the files app and drag and drop the file onto the Styles menu. It shows a green + suggesting it is adding the file, but the file doesn't appear in the drop down menu. Sighs... hoping a fix is on the way as it doesn't display the default styles correctly either.

The ability to import palettes or automatically create a palette from an open document has not been implemented in the iOS version. There have been a number of requests for these features and hopefully they will be added at some stage in the future. You can manually create and save a palette.

You can read how here:

What kind of cloud storage service are you using? I use Apple's iCloud Drive for things like this & it works fine when I tap on the Styles menu at the top of the Studio & select "Import Styles ..." & then select "iCloud Drive" from the locations & navigate to the folder I created in iCloud Drive with my .afstyles files in it. I don't use Dropbox but from what I read from other users, either Dropbox or Affinity sometimes (always?) fails to handle certain Affinity filetype extensions properly, not recognizing them as a filetype Affinity can use.

AFAIK, drag & drop from Files app into the Styles sub-section of the FX Studio has not been implemented & does not work.

I do not get the green + when I try this -- the dragged file icon just fades out when dropped onto the Styles menu. My guess is this won't work because an .afstyles file contains a styles category, & the Styles menu can only display an 'opened' styles category, so dropping the file there is like trying to add a category to a category.

The screen vid shows this quite clearly. Unfortunately the new style does not get added. Interestingly the default style is problematic. Note the first couple of default style icons. Nothing like what they should be. Prior to this release I could import styles from iCloud or drag/drop, now I cannot import any. The extras I have were retained in the update process. If others are not having this problem it maybe time to delete the app and reinstall. Alternatively it is model dependant.

All I can tell you is I don't get the green + symbol when I drag an .afstyles file from the Files panel folder I created on my iCloud Drive. I also tried adding an .afstyles file to the 'On my iPad' Designer folder (the badged one) & dragging from that folder from Files, but it was greyed out & I could not drag it at all.

I am not sure where your "Designer" folder is located, but if it is somewhere other than in your iCloud Drive, that might explain the difference.

Just tried setting saves to iCloud and then trying to import a style from iCloud Designer folder. Unfortunately it was greyed out.

Are your default styles showing correctly. You can see mine (around 5 posts above) showing Sunset and Rainbow incorrectly.

Are you saying you exported an .afstyles file to an iCloud Drive folder or something else? Like I said above, if I export one of them to the local "Designer" (or any other badged) folder, it is greyed out, presumably because those badged folders are sandboxed by iOS such that anything other than a native document format file (like .afdesign for the Designer folder) can't be accessed from them ... or something like that. :/

I see the same thing -- Sunset & Rainbow just show unfilled outlines.

No, I downloaded an .afstyles file and placed in in the iCloud Designer folder. I then used the Styles menu to 'import' the style. Couldn’t do it as the file was greyed out.

I am still not sure what you mean by "iCloud Designer folder." Is this a folder you created on your iCloud Drive & named "Designer" or something else, like maybe the "Affinity Designer" folder that has a "badge" showing the app's icon on it?

The folder created by the app.

Then that is the same thing I was talking about, the folder with the Affinity Designer icon "badge" on it. From what I can tell, the iPad app will only open .afdesign files  placed in that folder, but not other file types, which is why the .afstyles in it are greyed out.

You have to use Dropbox, I’ve been trying to import vector brushes & other various things from my iPad files. It simple doesn’t work, the only working method that I’m aware of is using Dropbox. I really hope this is something the Dev’s are aware of & it’s on the roadmap of things to fix as being able to importing stuff is rather important & it shouldn’t matter if the items are in the cloud somewhere or on your device they should just import. I actually was forced to get a Dropbox account because of this issue just so I can import things

I have tried other folders on iCloud with no luck. Also no go from Dropbox (which is my normal go to).

I'm striking out importing styles from anywhere (Dropbox or iCloud) The workaround for me is to use my desktop version to apply all my styles to a series of shapes and use that document as the master styles document where I can open it in Designert for iPad, select the shape and import the styles one at a time that way.

Consequently, this is also how I'm saving color palettes also. I'm just opening a screen grab of my desktop palette and manually making it on the iPad. Not ideal but it gets the job done.

Yeah, mods have confirmed there is a bug affecting style importing. Hopefully it will be fixed in next update.
