This happens when dragging from either the corner or centre handle. Doesn't matter whether image is embedded or linked. Are you placing it as an image layer or inside a picture frame? Do you mind sharing/uploading the publisher file with the image already in the master and saving it before scaling the image/crash? I just placed a picture frame & inserted the same image. This issue didn't present. I can't load the file as it contains some proprietary information.
