adjusting brush sizes

Recommended Posts

Ok; I know about drag sideways while holding down Alt + hold down L+R mouse button -- rather clumsy I feel.
However; I'm so used to using the mouse wheel and therefore missing it greatly
Is there anyway to switch the mouse wheel from screen image size to brush size?
If not; is it or can it be added to the Affinity "to do" (urgently) list?
Cheers

You can position the mouse pointer over the brush size entry box (context toolbar) and spin the mouse wheel, if that helps?

Morning Toltec, I also think holding Shift down will move it in increments of 10

Morning firstdefence, I also think holding Ctrl down will move it in increments of 0.1 :-)

I lowered to minimum the sensitivity of the Wacom intuos pro disc (in the side area with the functions buttons) at the windows control panel  and use it for brush increase/decrease....Works best for me. XP-Pen Deco 03 has a disc, too (a 100 $ tablet with active area of a medium :o )  , but dunno if does that disc thing as well ad the intuos Pro. For me, having tried the usual keys, dragging mouse, and other ways, this one rocks for a speedy workflow...

U can use a free GREAT utility I have since long always running with my Windows start ( I have almost every app configured in it !), called X-Mouse Button control. And once u get the hang of it (not easy, but neither rockets science) just add an app (like you would do in wacom's windows panel for particular app settings) , in this case maybe AP, and configure wheel-up , wheel-down. The actual UI of the software shows there the syntax u need to use to replace anything with anything... ( in this case, mouse wheel---> keys). I wouldn't replace wheel's zoom in/out not even if being paid a large sum to do so, lol....But seems you were *not* using that to zoom, so, yeah, check then that utility, might work GREAT for u. (I had a pair of super step by step tutorials-threads on how to use it around here, but not in the mood now to dig for that :D ) :

Beyonslay and ianrb  :

Oki, took one minute to do some speleology, my tutorial post here is from 2016, but hopefully the tiny great, low resources consume utility still works the same as I explained. I think I've been updating it ( I use it for everything, EXCEPT Affinity apps ( I don't needed it anymore, as now preferences in Aff. are veeery flexible), now that I've checked the config I'm using since very long time)  I use it with everything ( I add apps if some do have some weird keys or mouse/pen /controls) except as mentioned, Affinity (now. I used it a lot before), and when really the preferences of whatever software are just fine with me. From viewers ,browser, painting tools, editing, vectors... So I keep my shortcuts and mouse/pen behavior pretty similar across all tools. Feels WAY less of a change of context, if you will. I would usually NOT recommend these tools for painting in Affinity, but if is that much of a struggle for you not to use the wheel that way, a deal breaker for you, not to be able to increase/decrease brush size with mouse wheel (for me is essential to leave that for zooming, but hey) then there you have it, a perfect solution for you !  :)

So, the thread where I did explain its basic usage [ EDIT :  Hugely important.... Obviously, replace the final keys being triggered to be whatever you have in config to make brush increase/decrease....."[" for Wheel Down and "]"  for Wheel Up  (not with the {}, as those are for system things like the wheel controls, special keys like alt, ctrl, etc.... or cursor keys etc, not for normal letter keys (which you would write right away), I believe. Just test it. ] :

This post would not be complete if I wouldn't mention the other thing of this kind that people use. Some like one, some the other. I did find to prefer (it is also very light in resources usage, the other one, I don't know) X-Mouse Button Control, but is so long that I don't remember why I ended up choosing it over Autohotkey.  [  EDIT: Lol, I do remember now.... Autohotkey : NOT for the average point and click user. Quite more complex...I could set it easily, most ppl wont have the time and patience... ]   I do remember both of them had a great fame of being fantastic utilities, and the difference being one being more developed for scripting (Autohotkey). For the mouse + keys interaction, I have found X-Mouse always ideal. I have tested replacing several shortcuts in Affinity. Yet tho, these days, I simply prefer not, as my main one was wheel-zoom, and it was added very fast to AP and AD. You can have X-Mouse loaded but simply not making (or activating/deactivating, is a check mark the whatever profile you build per app, u can access the UI by RMB on tray ) it triggering when Affinity launches, then it wont do anything.

In some viewers, or in editing softwares,  they don't have middle mouse for panning, or wheel for zooming, and I dislike that, as I use my mouse as kind of just a navigator tool while I draw with my wacom intuos.

Oki, so, the one I have tested and everything, X-Mouse Control  :
http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm

And for those nerds ( is not for the 99% of people of this forums, graphical software users, IMO ) who like to test all  ;) , or need more depth in the scripting/automating part, or whatever  ( It is an amazing great open source tool, but really, not the best recommendation for this usage, by all means ) :
https://autohotkey.com

You would need to really study its scripting system to use it !!! ...Particularly the following , and using WheelUp and WheelDown.

https://autohotkey.com/docs/commands/Click.htm

NOTE : I just remembered right now ( and edited the post a bit accordingly) why I so strongly recommended X-Mouse Button Control and not Autohotkey, for our typical use. The latter is a HUGE flexible thing, an entire scripting system to do a lot of system and/or automated things (among which one can be coding a startup script that you can set ON/OFF from tray, for the keys/mouse clicks) it is tremendously deeper for the average Jane/Joe to learn it. Strongly recommended to go for X-Mouse instead, for most people (some nerds will prefer Autohotkey, hehe. Also, this one is open source).  AND, last but not least, I've been not recommending this so much since 2016, just because for tools where performance in the brushes (my major worry always, as u can see in my signature) is so critical, I tend to disable it to check if it affects. Most of people will forget if they are using it or not ! That said, I'm 99,9999999% sure that X-Mouse does not affect in the issues of the brush. But hey, better eliminate any factors. Still, for someone desperately needing the wheel for increase/decrease brush size, X-Mouse Button Control is the utility to use, IMO.
