edit a placed image? Are we locked into Affinity software?

Recommended Posts

So if I understand it correctly Publisher does not link placed images like indesign, everything seems to be embedded. Seems to me like this might lead to a problem if you want to edit the placed image and using something other then Affinities software. With Indesign I can right click on my image, then select "edit with"  and I am given a list of apps to open the image with. This is pretty flexible as you can see from the screen shot I can choose my Adobe apps or I can use Affinity plus a host of other apps of which I will never use for editing a picture.

Are we going to be locked into Affinity software for placed images and vectors that need editing because they are embedded ant not linked?

You can „unembed“ the images (see document menu) and additionally set the preferences to actualise an image, when externally edited.

Ok see now, document > resource manager.

Reminds me of how Quark works,  and not the preferred or easiest way in my opinion. That may just come down to personal preference.

 - Would like (if there is not already) a way to have placed file always be linked rather then embedded

-  Would like to be able to right click on an image and have an option to edit in the preferred application as Indesign does it

- ideally would like a links pane rather then going to resource manager. Much simpler to have a panel that is always open on the side (if I choose to have that) to see if something needs updating, is missing or to click the link and find in the document. Any other issues could be seen with a preflight panel (another of my must have items).

what we need here is an option to save all embedded files to a selected folder and link them to those folder...

this would somehow a bit overcome the missing  "packing option" also...

also we could need a right-click option from inside the  ressource manager to directly locate the file not only in the document or the layers, but also in the windows explorer...

+ 1

Although eventually a "packing option" is needed as well.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

In New Doc setup, and Document Setup you can now choose 'Linked preferred' under 'Image placement policy' so all placed images will be linked for that document.

Instead of exporting the embedded images altogether, why not put all the images in a folder. These will then be linked to the document. So you already have a folder with all images. These can also be edited at any time. In the beta version it is not yet possible to switch directly to Affintiy Photo. In the official version (V1) this will be possible. The images can then be processed even more efficiently.

I noticed that too this afternoon and set it to Linked preferred when I was making a new doc. However it didn't seem to work properly; the first image I placed was linked, but subsequent images were embedded. Although I'm still not sure how Publisher's Picture Frame and its content work together at the moment, so it's possible I'm just doing it wrong.

Because packing also pulls fonts and puts everything in a nice package neatly organized. Say you place images in your document, you do all the work but you forgot to put it in the folder, that would not matter when it comes time to package (as long as all links were still fine). It will automatically pull everything together for you. You can then delete all the loose stuff in a folder and are left with a workable file and 100% all necessary pieces for that file.

Mike have you checked in Resource Manager that they're actually embedded? Someone in a different thread has just pointed out that pdfs and psds are showing in the layers pallet as 'Embedded document' even though Resourse Manager is correctly showing them as linked.

You're right. The missing font is a problem if you send the file to another PC or Mac. If the font is missing, it always causes problems. Collecting all data in a folder is a good solution.

Adobe has also done something really good with their packages. If everything is correctly there in the font folder you do not need to activate fonts. Indesign automatically sees the font in the folder and uses them without need of font management software. It is really slick and has taken a big headache away with multiple font versions, deactivating reactivating etc. So if you have to send your packaged file (we get them from a few clients) I just open it and everything is there ready for my changes or for me to make a PDF and prep for proofs and press.
