DXF or DWG file import in Affinity Designer

Possibly good news:

Realising this trend in AEC adoption has led to the development team holding sessions with practices to get their feedback on features and enhancements to their core capabilities. The inclusion of support for DWG / DXF has come from that engagement and import / export is currently under test.

Hi redline.wolfgang,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

Some users already requested support for DXF and/or DWG files.

We are considering adding support for these kind of files in the future.

Has there been *ANY* progress regarding this? Its been several years, just tell us if you plan to do this or not so we can either commit to working around it or using different software altogether.

The other good news from this article is that V2 is coming out this year, that is... if things go as planned. It would be nice if at least DXF import/export would be available when V2 comes out. Especially for those in the field of technical illustration (e.g. manuals) or need to export for cutting machines this would be really great to finally have this functionality.

For those who need DWG support as well, the ODA has a free batch converter for Windows/Mac/Linux that can convert DWG files into DWF in batch or when you don't have DWG based software at all. That way you can still import into Affinity until DWG import/export is also implemented.

Add support for variable fonts as well and I can finally do without CorelDRAW for most technical graphics. 🙂

Hopefully it also brings .3dm.

What use would you make of a .3dm file in a 2D program?

You don't really need DWG support if it has DXF though. Hopefully it also brings .3dm.

I beg to differ on this, being able to import dwg saves having to create another file (also after every update) that needs to be tracked. With lots of files this makes a difference for ones workflow.

Aside from that, someone who is not familiar with CAD files may not realise the dwg can be converted to DXF and assume the file cannot be imported.

Rhino can also create 2D drawings, it is not uncommon to create a 3D model in Rhino and also do the related 2D (construction etc.) drawings in Rhino as well. There are also people who do common 2D work in Rhino as well because they don't want to spend money on an additional CAD program like AutoCAD (LT) for 2D only work.

I assume @Intuos5 was referring to being able to import those 2D drawings in Affinity Designer. In that case it might be easier to request the sender to provide DXF files of the 2D part of the Rhino file.

Is there something about it in the new versions?

Sorry this feature is not available in the current version.

hi you all, I didn't read the whole discussion. Is there something about it in the new versions? I am needing it right at this moment

According to this article https://aecmag.com/technology/serif-affinity-for-aec-firms/ Serif is testing import/export for inclusion in a future version. It also mentions  that V2 is scheduled to be released this year, so it could be that dwg/dxf import/export will be included in V2 at some point. (Hopefully when it V2 comes out or soon after that, though Serif will not mention/commit to a timeline as it depends on how well testing if the import/export is going)
