Photoshop brushes not behaving as they do in Photoshop

Recommended Posts

Hi,

One of the reasons I thought I'd give Affinity Designer a shot is because of the ability to load .abr brushes. I've loaded a few sets that I use in Photoshop, but they don't maintain the same behaviour. They act like stamps.

I can fiddle with the settings to make some of them kind of the same, but just wondering if anyone knows how to make .abr files behave the same in Affinity without having to go through and change everything on the brush to try to mimic the behaviour? Am i missing something? I am not sure what brushes everyone is using if they aren't using their .abr brushes from Photoshop as there doesn't seem to be a lot of Affinity brushes out there. Am I missing some gold mine of awesome Affinity brushes somewhere?

Keen to know what raster brushes people are using as I really want to love this program!

Ive attached some images to show what I mean. First is Photoshop and second is Affinity Designer.

Thanks heaps.

I build my own brush customization in every package, but also, I'm a fan of doing all artwork with basic brushes only mostly playing with the flow setting and glazing techniques while painting.

If you are interested in top of the line brushes for Affinity, definitely check Paolo Limoncelli's Daub brushes.

I'd rather go that way than trying to get imported same behavior of PS abr brushes here, maybe is possible, but is a different brush engine, dunno how the internals go, tho.

I was once on the idea that very complex brushes were everything. Today, what I mostly (or...even only) see as an advantage is the good mimicking of traditional media brushes, like what you get in Rebelle or Art Rage, or Paolo's brushes . Even while my main brush usage is pure round brushes with careful settings (with which I mimic traditional painting from time to time). Round basic (non textured) tend to be also faster in performance, in most apps. That said... If at any point I'd plan on going for complex brushes I'd go for this talented artist ones...Just have a glance at his pencils, for example... He even makes several for free, for Affinity.

And I'm no way associated with him or his business, btw.

Yes, I totally agree with you in that a couple of brushes is all you need, but I do like to have a few other ones up my sleeve for times when you need different effects so was hoping it would just be a simple transfer over. I have five brushes from Photoshop that I use everyday (even though i have a tonne of others sitting there that I never use!) and I'm so used to how they work I was hoping they would be a nice addition and make it easy at that start to work in a new program. They are all just simple bristle/gouache/pencil/crayon brushes so might be time to make some myself and break free of my usual thing! Life's always about learning right :)

Thanks of the link up to Paolo. I found some nice ones from Frankentoon too:

Thanks heaps for your help and encouragement to make my own :)

Ouch! How could I forget those !!!  They also sell other stuff, their site is an amazing resource (huge apologies from here.... ).

Surely I will still leave a bunch of brush authors out, but to collect here a bit of those which I've been noticing bumping with new brushes lately.... :

You have a lot of options, to seek and find brushes that behave similar, maybe even better, than your usual ones in PS... I'd try as much of these as you can... These collections are , many free, or extremely cheap. If your work depends on certain brush types, I would have no doubt, is a no-brainer... I'd get 'em all....  :D
