Finally managed to install. Neither download nor install were straightforward. Didn't think s/w had downloaded until I saw dmg file in Finder. Opened dmg but didn't think it installed until I saw app in download area of Finder. Could not drag it to Apps area. Finally figured out I could copy/paste App to desktop and then drag it to Apps area. Now it's finally in right place and opens and runs properly. This will probably all get corrected eventually.

Absolutely.  If Publisher follows the same distribution channels as Photo and Designer on the Mac (and I suspect it might), it will only be sold through Apple's Mac App Store.  Therefore it will be directly installed immediately after purchase, without users having to "muck about" with DMG files or installers, etc.  This is just the method used for distribution during the beta stage.

Like @wonderings & @logrunner I also had no problems opening the dmg & dropping it into the Applications folder.

@JustinW, what Mac OS version are you using?
