find and replace options

I hope this isn't mentioned elsewhere. In my work with books and other documents, I use the find and replace opine in Indesign  to find all the numbers as an example and replace the font with another one. I can also save this find and replace as a preset and if you have ever tried to change the font of only numbers or change all the quotation marks to straight double quotation marks in a 150 page book, you can imagine how time saving this can be. 

I am very happy with this first beta, there are already things I can see loving to use in my work and look forward to hopefully ePub exports, the ability to import large texts documents that will automatically create additional pages to fit the text, packaging files for the printer and likely a ton of features I never thought about but you guys will come up with.

You can do similar find/replace tasks in the Find and Replace panel in Publisher (View > Studio > Find and Replace) using the cog/gear icon in the Find box to find characters by their characteristics. However, it does not seem possible to do the same with the Replace box to change those characteristics. That ends up deleting the text you found. So, having found the text, you'd need to apply a style to it or make the font change some other way.

That would be no good at all for me. Imagine getting a document several hundred page and having to change each number to the new font one by one. Indesign has a very robust find and replace function, I am hoping we get most of what it has (or better!) in upcoming updates. I have become a little obsessed with the idea that I will someday soon be able to do my design work on my iPad while away instead of taking my laptop. I did some changes on a logo with Designer from a file I had on dropbox in the iPad and it was so convenient! With Photo and someday Publisher this would be so awesome!

Find/Replace suggestion

I received text full of mistakes like is shown in attachment. I didn't find any possibility how to find (in my case) hyphen+space and replace it for none character in whole document which rejoins all that incorrectly hyphenated words . There is just step by step manual work.

On Windows (but not, apparently on Mac at this time), you can Find "- " and Replace with nothing by:

1. Clicking in the Replace field and typing a character
2. Backspacing to delete the character
3. Then using Find and Replace (or Replace All) as you would expect.

This seems to be another case that works on Windows but is broken on Mac (along with, in that dialog, the missing Find/Replace icons to allow use of the invisible characters).

(Note: I'm not sure why typing and deleting a character in the Replace field should be needed, but I'm not sure that's a bug.)

I tried to do it on my Mac but it didn't work. The FIND is working and jumps from one error to another but without chance to replace for „nothing“.

The find and replace does not let you insert something with a different font e.g. a Zapf dingbats symbol, for me it would be a card symbol

In design lets you paste whatever is on the clip board and ready to paste

Yes, it does. However, as text fields have a font specified as part of their style, you need to specify the new font when you do the Replace. So, you would copy the character you need and paste it into the Replace box. (Note that it may display strangely, for dingbats.)

Then you click the cog icon for "Replace with" and choose Options. Then use the Font tab, select your Font, and click OK. Then do your Find/Replace operation. Wherever you do a replacement you will get 1 character of your chosen font in that spot.

(Note: I'm on Windows. The Mac Find and Replace dialog seems to be lacking a few things that Windows allows. Probably that will be fixed in a later beta release.)
