Averlane
Hey all, I'm new to Affinity Designer, but I'm loving it thus far! I am having trouble with the example picture though and I'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. The example is a map I am drawing in Designer. The shore line is drawn with a black vector line and then given a light blue outline (with layer styles) to indicate the sea. After this I came back through and drew another vector line representing a river that was the same light blue color and then was given a black outline (with layer styles, again). You can see the result below, but what I want to happen is for the "river" to disappear into the sea while still maintaining the black outline only while it is inland. (The land also has a shadow layer style and fill to give it the look it has) I have tried clipping the layers, but it doesn't seem to be working out for me, also I've tried painting the light blue color with a pixel brush. It works ok, but definitely not the prettiest. Thank you in advance for your help
Staff stokerg Posted August 23, 2018 Staff Share Posted August 23, 2018 Hi Averlane and Welcome to the Forums Would you mind attaching the .afdesign file for this and i'll see what we can do. My 1st thought would be to use the Vector Crop tool and try cropping the end away. However that is almost the same as clipping, which you've already tried, so may not give the best results. Also you could try setting the Outline Effect to Gradient and then try setting a gradient on the outline, so you get a fade from black to transparent at the end of the river. Once i have the file i'll be able to advise better if no one else has posted a better method

Alfred
You have two closed shapes which overlap. Can’t you simply use the ‘Add’ operation, or do you particularly need the sea to have a wider black stroke than the river? R C-R
Any reason the sea can't have a simple solid light blue fill? If that's acceptable you could just place it above the river in the layer stack & it would hide the overlapping part of the river. Averlane
Thank you for your replies everyone! Sorry I am just getting back to this now. I am attaching the .afdesign for you, stokerg. dutchshader, that might have to be the way to go. αℓƒяє∂, that comes up with unexpected results. Getting rid of the rivers or the mainland R C-R, your suggestion worked out quite well on 90% of the drawing! I'll need to figure out how to get the last little bit to work. I have some smaller islands that are within that outline that get covered up by the fill, or the fill around those islands covers up the mainland. It might take some cropping to get it to work out just right. haiti_map.afdesign
Guest
If I understand correctly, to avoid rivers disappearing, select them and "Expand Stroke" before doing "Add".
