Lay is transitive: it needs an object (as in ‘lay an egg’ or ‘lay a book on the table’) but lie is intransitive and can’t have an object (e.g. you can lie down, but you can’t lie a book down). I do believe (we were taught it was correct anyway) that lying can mean to lie down although I know that a lot of spelling and grammar that we learnt a while back has changed nowadays so may now be considered archaic I guess.
