Adjust masks by using curves

Recommended Posts

Hello together,

i am wondering if it is possible to adjust a mask by using curves, contrast and so on to seperate the midtones and get more either black or white color in the mask.

If i create a mask by using for example red tones, i want to edit this mask by using a curve and make lighter grey tones white and darker grey tones black.

However, i can’t manage to do this in affinity photo. When I option+click the mask, i can see it and i can paint onto it, but i can’t apply curves to seperate the shades of grey.. I also tried by dragging a curve onto the mask icon, but it didn’t change anything.

Maybe someone has a clue or knows that this just doesn’t work in AP.

Best regards

Wolfgang

You'll also want to make the curves/levels adjustment layer a child layer to the mask.

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but I can't get a mask to receive a child layer until I un-nest it, apply the adjust layer to it, and then nest the mask back onto the photo. Anyone have a better way of doing this?

The current UI doesn't allow us to drag an object into a mask-nested object, but there has been requests for that to be allowed, so it may be possible in the future.

Are you sure? I guess its working. See pic.

But however, if you mean something different: just make a group of this mask- layer and put in the group whatever you need.

Thank you guys, that really helped! Now there's just one big thing that would help me a lot: is there any way to show how the adjustments change the mask itself?

It would be awesome if I could option+click and see the mask, and do the adjustments in this view!
