Cannot Export Vectors with Transparent Backgrounds

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have been unable to export PDF, SVG, or EPS files with transparent backgrounds.  I have tried multiple ways, but keep getting white backgrounds no matter what I do.  I even built a simple circle and tried exporting with no luck.

I have included the file I was working with and needed to send to a client.

Thank You for your time.

Hi NexusFX,

Welcome to the forums :)

I've downloaded your file and exported it as PDF, using the PDF (for export) preset exporting Artboard 1 only. Opening this PDF in Acrobat Pro automatically gives it a white page background, but this is not part of the file. If you open Acrobat Preferences (CTRL+K) and navigate to Page Display, then check 'Show Transparency Grid'. Now your PDF will display as it's been exported, without a background. I've attached the PDF I've created below:

What program is your client using? It may be specific to their import procedure to keep the transparent background.

Hello,

I am unsure what they are using but they will be printing this on to a T-Shirt.  It bothers me that when previewing on a Mac desktop and when opening in preview there is no way to see the transparency, despite the fact that other files do (tiff, png, etc).

I have some other questions as well.

There is a glitch that seems to happen when closing designer(desktop, mac) that causes the crash dialog to appear even through the app is still open, or happens as I am closing the app.  This tends to occur as I use the ctrl+zoom feature when opening the app at times.  The reset affinity dialog will pop up, i will cancel it, then go about my edits. Its after this that it happens.

Also, under General settings the checkbox for re-open files is checked but when re-opening the app the previous work does not show up?

Thank You for your time.

This is a design limitation implemented by Apple and unfortunately I can see no way of setting the PDF preview to show it's transparent background, but a more indepth PDF reader may be able to, as above.

I've not heard of this crash behaviour before, however I'd certainly recommend avoiding holding CTRL/CMD when launching the app unless you need to reset the app, as this dialogue will not show otherwise and this could be causing adverse behaviour. I'll take a look into it and inform our developers if required.

For this feature to work it requires a setting change under your Macs general settings. Open System Preferences > General and untick Close windows when quitting an app.

Now in Designer with your saved projects open, you must use Affinity Designer > Quit (or simply CMD + Q) and when re-opening designer your files will also re-open :)
