Losing quality when resizing document, why?

Recommended Posts

Why is resizing an image so difficult? I would really like this to be my photoshop replacement but not being able to achieve something so simple is a pain in the butt.

I have an image that is 600 dpi that I'm trying to resize to 800 px, all I do is Document > Resize Document, type 800 px, hit tab and than resize and image turns out slightly blurry than the original

Now when I do the same resize in Gimp, there is no loss of quality, I actually had to do all my images in Gimp cause I wasn't haven't any problems and Gimp is free, lol

Am I doing something wrong?  why is this so difficult?

Hi bpack14,

Welcome to the forums!

DPI and pixel size are different beasts and should be treated as such. If you are not looking to print your document then dpi is irrelevant, I'd really recommend reading the following post on the forum as many users explain this better than I.

Could you upload a full size image that you want to re-size and your image from GIMP that has been re-sized, so I can take a look into this for you?

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!

That comparison may not be enough for Serif or other forum users to help you. Having the actual photos, as Dan requested, is often critical to resolving issues.

If there's some reason you can't share the originals here then Serif can provide a secure upload link so that only they will have access.

Here is the link for said files, I can see there is a difference between the Affinity and GIMP images but without the original reference there is not much I can recommend!

In Affinity I use Document > Resize Document

You mentioned that in your first post, but I asked which Resample method you are using. If you don't know what that means, open the Resize Document window & look for the 4th item from the top. It is a popup with several different choices.

Just use Export, set the width or height to 800px (you don't say which this is) Select Lanczos 3 (separable) and export.

Done using the settings mentioned above (width resized to 800px)

The same can be done in the Resize Document panel for the same effect (albeit destructive, unlike firstdefence's method)
The quality of the document after being resized all depends on the Resample method, and Lanczos 3 (separable) is the best option here for your work. I hope this helps!

Sorry, "bilinear" is what I'm using

Try changing this to Lanczos 3 (separable) and you'll see much better results :)

You're not doing anything wrong. The "options" in the crop area are completely useless to someone in a production environment. This is my biggest beef with Affinity Photo, and the only reason I do not recommend it to other professionals. I've requested this be addressed, and I received a reply that it would be. All we want is a way to type in dimensions and a resolution desired, and to have Affinity constrain proportionally, and interpolate intelligently when we drag the handles of the crop tool and hit enter. "Just like Photoshop" is probably the bane of their developers existence lol. I crop loads of images every day with an old version of Photoshop, and my shiny new Affinity Photo gets almost zero usebecause of this simple oversight. Actually the only reason I've launched the app since I discovered the crop deficiency (the second time I ever launched it) was by accident.

I'm sorry to hear you feel this way Chosen Idea. As confirmed by one of our devs Ben in this thread, we've reworked the crop tool for 1.7 and this will hopefully address some of your issues raised above when released.

Thanks. Yes, I'm looking forward to it. Any idea when 1.7 will be out, and if that means an upgrade fee from the Affinity Photo I haven't even been able to use yet?

Hi Chosen Idea,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
There's no eta for 1.7 release yet. It should become available as a Customer Beta first. All minor updates (1.x) are free until version 2.0 (which is a paid upgrade).

As usual, I appreciate the speed at which I receive a response from over there! It sounds good. I'm excited to break my Adobe bonds here lol.
