3enjamin
Hi! I’m in the pixel persona. I want to select an area of the layer I’m working on and delete it. I choose the Free hand Selection Tool. I draw the shape of the area I want to delete. Now I want to close the shape. At this point I have two options: a) I hover over the starting point of the shape I’m drawing. The info-bar at the bottom of the screen says ‘Click to add closed selection’. I click. Result: The shape I’m drawing disappears. b) I hover outside the starting point of the shape I’m drawing. The info-bar at the bottom of the screen says ‘Double-Click to close the selection’. I double-click. Result: The shape I’m drawing disappears. Question: How do I close a shape drawn by the Free hand Selection Tool? And, ultimately, how do I manually select and delete an area of a pixel layer? See screencast for a demonstration. how to close selection?.mov
Staff MEB Posted July 11, 2018 Staff Share Posted July 11, 2018 Hi 3enjamin, Welcome to Affinity Forums You have to change the Mode to New in the context toolbar. Right now you have it set to Subtract. Since there's no active selection yet there's nothing to subtract from. 3enjamin
Cheers MEB, that did the trick:) Are there any keyboard shortcuts to change between the Modes?
Staff MEB Posted July 20, 2018 Staff Share Posted July 20, 2018 Hi 3enjamin, Pressing and holding ⌃(ctrl) adds to the existing selection. Pressing and holding ⌥ (option/alt) subtracts from the current selection. Alanb65
Hi. I am having the same problem as 3enjamin, however I am already in the 'New' setting and still the shapes do not close. All of the other selection tools work just fine. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Cheers Alan
Staff MEB Posted November 2, 2018 Staff Share Posted November 2, 2018 Hi Alanb65, Welcome to Affinity Forums What Type are you using (in beginning of the context toolbar). Clicking over the initial node or pressing Enter should close the selection. Alanb65
I have used Free hand, polygonal and Magnetic. All three give the same results. the others, i.e. Square, circular etc. are fine. It did work a few weeks ago, when I first installed the software, is it possible I have been stupid and pressed something on my keyboard or screen which stops this from working? FYI, I am using Windows 10.
Staff MEB Posted November 2, 2018 Staff Share Posted November 2, 2018 Have you tried what I suggested (for Polygonal and Magnetic)? Clicking over the initial node or pressing Enter should close the selection. Doesn't it work for you? On these modes it doesn't close automatically as in the Freehand. Alanb65
Yup. Tried both as soon as you suggested it, just in case I was being a muppet.
Alanb65
Still trying to work out how to close the free-hand selection tool ( this is a continuation of last weeks discussion). would it be better to simply uninstall the software and start again do you think? Staff MEB Posted November 5, 2018 Staff Share Posted November 5, 2018 Hi Alanb65, No need to uninstall the app. You can try to perform a reset but I'm still unsure it will fix the issue. Are you using a mouse, trackpad or pen/tablet while working in Photo? Do you have any third party utilities that may interfere with mouse clicks? In case you want to reset the app press and hold ⌃(ctrl) while launching it until a Clear User Data dialog appears, keep the first three checkboxes ticked then press Clear. Note that selecting all boxes will also reset keyboard Shortcuts, Brushes etc etc. You may want to save/backup them before performing a full reset. See this this video Affinity - Exporting User Settings and Keyboard Shortcuts for instructions. Alanb65
Hi MEB. Tried the full factory reset, not worried about settings as I hadn't created any, and I am pleased to say everything is now working as it should. For future reference, I am using mouse control. Thanks for the advice and help. Al.
