Selecting and Copying Part of a Layer

Recommended Posts

In the Windows version, how do you click and drag to select part of a layer and copy it?  The only help I've found on this talks about features to do exactly this, that live on the Tools menu.  On the Windows version of AD, there is no Tools menu.  It doesn't appear when nothing's selected, it doesn't appear when you select a layer.  This is one of the differences I've described previously in the Mac and Windows versions that are not documented.  To wit, please see the "Creating pixel selections" in the help file that comes with the Windows version.  Also if you try and find the tools it references - Marquee Selection, Free Hand Selection Tool, etc - they do not exist when you go into Customize Tools... in the Windows version.

You can't copy part of a layer, unless you mean a pixel layer. If so, make a pixel selection then press Ctrl + J. It will copy just the selected area to a new layer.

Note that it must be a Pixel layer, not an Image layer. If it is an Image layer, right click and choose 'rasterise'

If you wan't to copy a complete later, press down Ctrl and click drag on a layer to duplicate the whole thing. Or right click and choose Duplicate.

All the controls to show tools or toolbars are in the view menu.

Designer is primarily a vector-based program, although it can do raster-based operations when you use the Pixel persona. Those tools are part of the Pixel persona, and to customize the tool bar that contains them you need to be in that persona before you start the customization.

O.M.G.  I can't believe how much time I spent looking for these.  Thank you Walt, after many hours of fruitless search I now see the selection tools after clicking the Pixel Persona button.  Sigh.
