JTC
When I try to use a selection tool, the context bar comes up. To the right of the Mode button, the Add and Subtract selections are grayed out.
firstdefence
Welcome to the forum. Its a good idea to put what you are using, what Platform/Operating System you're on and a screenshot of the app you are using always helps. You may be trying to select from an image layer, if so right click on that image layer and choose Rasterise, then try to use the Selection Tool. JTC
Thank you. I am running windows 10. Your suggestion had no effect. I have also noticed that, when using the crop tool and using custom ratio, I couldn't pick the units. Might this be rlated? Again, thank you. Might this be rlated? You can't pick the units because it is a ratio. Ratios have no units because they just specify the numerical ratio of one number to another. Staff DWright Posted July 8, 2018 Staff Share Posted July 8, 2018 Can you please provide a screen shot showing the Add / Subtract buttons on the selection being greyed out, as R C-R says the ratio is numeric such as 3:6 to enter units please use the Absolute Dimensions mode

JTC
The Add and Subtract are grayed out for any image I am working with. I tried uninstalling Affinity Photo and reinstalling it but that didn't solve the problem. Evidently the windows uninstall I used doesn't remove everything. For example, there was still a list under Open Recent. Is there a way to completely uninstall Affinity so I can reinstall it? Thank you. walt.farrell
You seem to be in "customize toolbar" mode (View->Customize Toolbar) as indicated by the dotted boxes in the toolbar. You need to close that dialog before you can continue using Affinity Photo. Perhaps you have (or had?) multiple monitors and the dialog is displaying on the other one? JTC
The Customize Toolbar is itself grayed out. So I think you're right. So how do I completely uninstall Affinity on a Windows machine? I tried uninstalling it using windows but that doesn't completely uninstall it. For example, my Open Recent list was still there.
JTC
My problem is fixed. To reset Affinity to factory settings (on a windows machine), hold down the CTL key when you start Affinity. Thanks everyone for your advice. Much appreciated. Alfred
